The usual hype has started. Dustin Johnson retweeted a tweet showing that he hit it onto the front of the 14th in Kapalua which is 310 yards up hill, into the wind with his R1.

Any idea on an official release date lads?

From the photos alone I'd say it adds about 20 yards to your drive, possibly more but would have to wait to hit it to be sure. The compass looks handy as well.

That's what i hate, pro's saying that only after 3 shots with my new Taylormade, i've already gained 10 yards on my old driver. If that was the case and with the amount of times Taylormade release new clubs every staff player would average about 340 off the tee.

Feb 1 in the States so not sure if it's the same here? Probably will be close enough I imagine.

I was thinking that they wouldn't have a new R13 driver ,with13 being unlucky for some .but why didn't they go the motor trade route .they could of called it the R131 nice ring to it I think!

They couldn't use R131. People would get it confused with the road going over the east link toll bridge.

The driver looks like The A Team van

Surprise Surprise, a Tayormade staff player is singing its praises, he could hardly say its rubbish and still pick up his $1000000 cheques.

The sooner the average player stops buying into this hype and spending a fortune on "the furthest hitting driver we ever made" the sooner they might cop themselves on and stop bring out new clubs ever few months.

Also, very nice of them to change the shaft fitting so if you do have a nice shaft on an older model you cant change it without spending more money:rolleyes:.

Was just watching the golf (or lack of) in Hawaii and they were interviewing Bubba. I had to pause it, walk over to the TV and make sure I was seeing his cap right. It had G25 on it! The G20 only came out a few weeks ago it seems like. Clubs are going out of date faster than laptops.

In fairness to Ping, I believe the engineers and designers of the G series of clubs are all blokes. So naturally it's going to take a process of trial and error before they find the G spot.

Could be wrong but pretty sure the G20's came out around the end of 2011 ?

Could well be Tin Cup, just seems like such a short time between new clubs. Makes my G10s look old but I'll stick with them until the G45s come out at least.

G25 looks a lot nicer than the R1 anyway, to get back to the OPs point.

Think the biggest endorsements of drivers are the guys using them that are not contracted. Luke Donald and Paddy both use a TM driver for free, I’m sure I read somewhere on Golfwrx that almost 100% of drivers where guys can put anything in the bag are TM Drivers. Not sure what model they use but they are both white.

Check out Dustin Johnson's driving stats on the PGA Tour for the last five years. Now for a fella who is trumpeting the extra yardage he's getting with each TM upgrade, his stats are remarkably static! In fact, he went backwards last year from 2011. Just shows what a pile of pi$$ all the TM hoopla is.

    DJ's Driving stats

    2012 - 310.2 yards (4th)
    2011 - 314.2 yards (2nd)
    2010 - 308.5 yards (3rd)
    2009 - 308.3 yards (3rd)
    2008 - 309.7 yards (4th)

No one is disputing they make good drivers, just that the difference between them is minimal. If money wasn't a factor we would all have the newest, but in reality the new one isn't much different to the previous one/couple.

Your point just proves how crucial it is to keep updating to the next TM model every year (or 6 monthly ideally) - if DJ hadnt kept up to date with TM driver improvememnts his driving stats would have deteriorated so badly that he could only average 250 yards and we would be asking "Remember Dustin Johnson. Whatever happened to him ?". Just shows how good their gear really is.

Fair point. By the time he'd be ready for the seniors tour he'd actually be hitting the ball backwards.
