What Happens If I Cancel My Sky Subscription ?

    Hi there people...

I'm thinking of cancelling my Sky Subscription... as I now use Netflix alot... and would like to try and save on the subscription.

If I cancel my subscription... what exactly will happen... will I have no TV at all..? so channels...? no signal... ? just blue screen...? or will I still have some channels working...?

What about my Sky+ box... will any of those features work anymore... I would really like to know this... and if possible try it out.... if it's a disaster... I can always just sign up again... or I was also thinking of maybe getting a FreeView Box installed.... any comments... ideas.... I'm really just trying my household outgoings without having to feel too much pain in the loss of Sky.

I have been a Sky user now for 18 years.... so this is a big step... but if I can get the info I need, maybe it could be all for the best.

Any comments or ideas most welcome.

    Regards,
    Anthony

    You will have FTA channels.
    This list, but I am not 100% sure, but if its and Irish Sky box then you may not have the ITV/CH4 ones;
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free-to-air_channels_at_28%C2%B0E

You won't be able to record.

You will need a saorview box for Irish channels.

You will have the uk free to air channels.

You will lose the sky+ function.

Cheers Yop for those comments and advice.

Would you reckon I would be just better off so and getting Freeview properly installed in the house as a one off install, that way it will pay for itself within one year and no more subscription charges...?

Where do you live? You'll only get Freeview in border areas or on parts of the east coast.

    Hi Karsini...

I live in Cork... well outside Cork in a place near Blarney Village called Donoughmore.

I came across these guys when Googling the issues... wonder if they are any good..?

Antony, you might like to try Mallow TV - they did a installation for a friend of mine earlier his year and she was very pleased - can't remember the guy's name off hand but I know he posts in Sat forum.

If you already have Sky+ I would recommend buying a Freesat+ box - not cheap but it will fulfil all of the functions with all the free UK channels (excluding the Irish ones) - you could just swap box for box then - it's very straightforward. You might need to add an aerial to get the Irish channels but that shouldn't be too costly.

OP if you already have a sky dish in place then all you need to do is swap your sky box for a different box and that will work right away with any satellite receiver you want to buy, if you want all the UK FTA channels and the Irish Saorview channels then you will need a combo box and an aerial for Saorview reception. There is no need to get anybody out to install this for you as you can do this yourself very easily, if money is tight why not sell your sky box on Adverts.ie or similar and that way the outlay for the combo box will not be too much. If you want to know what channels you will be left with if you cancel sky then simply remove the card from the sky box and whatever channels clear these will be free to you for life.

    Hi Dub12Dave....

That's the clearest and best advice I got to date.... and that's what I'm going to go with.... I have already been onto Harvey Normans and he's confirmed your analysis of what I need to do and how simple it all is (as I was looking at hiring a guy to come out to sort all this) and how easy it is just to replace the box. A simple swap.

Thank you so much for your help and clear advice Dave... very much appreciated and a Very Happy New Year to you and your family.

    Hi evilivor

Thank you for your earlier comments. I might still give your man a call as I want to now get the best combi box available for my needs and this guys might just be the man for the job.

    Thanks again.

    OP
If you want to have 1 box, I bought a Ferguson arriva 250 box, there is the 120 version also.
If you checkout Satellite.ie, their lad Tony is on boards, and get one off them. Its 1 single remote and its one box which you plug in the cable from your satellite for all the UK free channels and if you have your RTE aerial, you plug this into the second socket.

I have it here and its dead on. Should be able to plug in and use in about 5 minutes.

I'm guessing he means that more people will go FTA if the UKTV channels (Gold, Dave, Good Food etc) are made available on Freesat.
