Was it a bright moonlit night where you were? Birds will often sing when there is enough light. We are getting into breeding season already, singing males are on the lookout for mates.

Birds sing at night because the artificial light confuses them, tricking them into thinking it is approaching dawn or is already daylight.

Yes - plus the current weather is more like late April then early January.

Yesterday evening I had 3 or 4 Blackbirds singing in my area and a Robin nextdoor, It was really like Spring.

1 of our robins at the front of the house thinks he's an owl, all night, right under 'his' street light. Very happy little fellow.

Added bonus of green leaves, a little sprinkle of them, just under the light itself. Rest of the tree is barren.
