Can all cars do hand brake turns? i tried to lock the back wheels using the hand brake and nothing happened but a light appearing on the dashboard and a beeping noise, not very exciting. the car has disc brakes on the back i imagined this would make it easier? so whats the story is my brakes pants or is it that some cars aren't meant to skid. i have tried it with traction control both on and off.

ps its just a curiosity thing if i do find out how to them i wont be down the local tescos car park with spin fm turned up to 11 with smoke coming from my tyres

Drums are generally better as far as the handbrake is concerned. You could try practicing on gravel as the car will slide more at lower speeds.

Maybe your handbrake needs adjustment. Or you are doing it wrong...

Not all cars can do them btw

pulling handbrakes and taking off again in front wheel drives is the biggest anti climax i have ever experienced.

It needs quick action, frisk it up, don't be afraid to yank it! :pac:

Seriously though, sometimes its bad shoes or it's pulling on one side. You need to unsettle the car a bit, then give it a shot with the handbrake. Many years of practice in fields ;)

Some cars had them on the front too you'd be a while trying to get that one to turn wit the handbrake! :P

Try reversing really fast, while your still going backwards, slip it in neutral rev the bolic out of it and bang it into first and watch those wheels smoke. Just watch out for the law hiding behind a tree with a video camera.

Don't be afraid of it. You need a bit of momentum. (Not very good for your car especially on a grippy surface). Turn sharply at speed so the back starts to go a bit, then lift it.

Pick yer spot, get it in a low gear to get some power down, full lock , lift handbrake . Takes practice to find out how much momentum to get to swing the car around. Drums are better but discs will lock the rear wheels too

Had some fun last month handbraking in a cold, wet car park and somebody else's Yaris - who knew a Toyota could give so much joy.

    I have heard....
one would need to pick up a little speed, then turn the wheel and lift the handbrake.

What I use the ol' handbrake is for changing direction. There is no point in using it to turn and then stop....

I have done a bit of autotesting (and I'm fairly crap at it :)) and what I've found is to upset the back of the car by a half turn the "wrong" way and then turn hard the "right" way. Then a hard tug of the handbrake. Drop the handbrake when about half way through and get back on the power. The back will continue to slide a bit and the power will pull the car out. The more you want the car to turn the longer you keep the handbrake up for.

The ol' handbrake was very useful in the ice and snow of two winters ago as I was using it to kick the back of the car out to kill understeer in the snow. It was the only way of getting enough speed through a junction at the bottom of a hill to climb the hill.

...yep got caught out that myself in a field, years ago, in a 99 EMS. Most uncelubrious. :p
