It has a belt but also has a chain linking the two camshafts together like most 16 valve engines.

It has both actually. But in the main it is belt driven. The chain is only a small chain between the two camshafts.

Edit: Beaten to it by Row!

The chains can give trouble but generally not with the symptoms you describe. Have you been told by a garage that the chain is stretched or are you trying to diagnose the loss of power yourself?

Turbo breather pipe/hose could be split, very common problem on the 1.6 TDCi.

Also check the really basic stuff, like has the vacuum line fallen off the turbo actuator. Seen this happen to a good few of them recently.

Thanks for the information. The garage said that the chain was stretched and this was causing the power loss.

If the chain has stretched then you should hear it rattling....A worn chain can be caused by low oil pressure...Was there a turbo fitted lately..?

If the chain has stretched or worn then get it replaced asap.
A badly worn chain can wear into the top of the head and break totally which leads to bent valves, broken rockers etc....

Get a diagnostic check done to see what faults are logged...As george said it could be something simple.
