would you consider something like adobe lightroom or apple aperture (if you have a mac) both are great pieces of software for editing photos. well worth the money!

i can't speak for photoshop elements, as i use full version photoshop. but i find i don't use photoshop much, but aperture all the time.

try a trial of lightroom to see what you think before purchasing. it'll save you the money if you decide you don't like it! (but i think you will!) :)

I would opt for Lightroom also, a really easy piece of software to get to know and lots of youtube tutorials available also. For the money it is far superior than Picassa, not knocking Picassa at all but it is basic. If you are shooting raw then Lightroom will give you great results.

Am I right in saying Lightroom 4 isn't compatable with Windows XP?

I use Picasa but plan on getting LR 4 and trying it out.

While I'm happy with Picasa, LR can do so much more.
There's a wealth of sites with tutorials etc. out there.
Digital Photography School.com have a lot of them, look
    here and here

Correct, you need vista or later

Its a steep enough price (or at least for me), though no-one ever said photography was cheap!

I would definitely upgrade from Picasa to one of Lightroom or Elements. I'm an Elements user, haven't had the chance to use Lightroom, but before that my editing software was Picasa as well. There's just no comparison.

Personally don't do much post processing , but have Elements , and it is a lot cheaper than photoshop , and seams to do everything it says on the tin - so i too recommend elements
