I was walking on the beach earlier with my boyfriend and came across this; it looks like some sort of animal. Just curious to find out if anyone would have any idea what kind of animal it may have been, poor thing. :(

Does the skull belong to the body?

I'm assuming so, I mean it was right beside the body. Help is much obliged. :)

    How big was it?

My first thought was a porpoise.

The skull looks quite similar too http://www.wildscope.com/cetacean_bones.htm

It was fairly large actually, I never thought of a porpoise. It seems to be dead for a few days now, looking like someone killed it. :(

I am guessing 4ft or there abouts looking at the foot prints, how big was the dog, did it have a blow hole? (not the dog)

your pictures look very like the OPs skull picture.

Sad. What makes you say that.

yes, that sounds about right for a harbour porpoise. They are also the most common cetacean in Irish waters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harbour_porpoise

Probably a Porpoise al right, they're pretty common. Where about did you find it, I'm from Malahide and came across something similar before. The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group might be able to help you figure out what it is / was.

People often get the two mixed up or call both dolphins, I usually do, porpoise are generally smaller, the web can tell you more but I can't. You should give the iwdg a shout they keep records of spottings and finds and use the info for conservation purposes, my dad works with them sometimes now he's retired

At first I thought it might be a junior dolphin, the reason I asked about the blow hole,

I did think I spotted something resembling a blow hole in the second photo.
