So, what are your plans for 2013?

Any species you'd like to finally see; somewhere to visit; project to get done or new toys to buy?

And of course, how was your 2012?

Looking at 2 possbilities for foreign birding trips around late May. One involves a week in the Morovia region of the Czech Republic for a feast of raptors on ancient wetlands and old growth forests. Species nearly quaranteed include Sea-Eagle, Saker Falcon, Red Kite, Black Kite, Marsh Harrier, Montagues Harrier and Imperial Eagle. Also a whole host of breeding wildfowl, herons, egrets and woodland species.

The other option is central Italy near the Appennine National park. Good chance of seeing Honey Buzzards, Golden Eagle, Bee-Eaters, various woodpeckers and warblers of the type that are scarce or absent in this country. Also a chance of a wolf sighting which would be just awesome!!

On the home front I hope to install a few acres of bird-cover on my place in the West and up my mink trapping efforts.

Starting an internship in Wexford this month, so hoping to get familiar with the slobs and see plenty of species I havn't seen before ( Hen Harrier, Short Eared Owl and Merlin are top of my wishlist!), and just generally improve my waterbird and wader ID skills!

And I had learned around 40 bird calls at the start of this year, but have forgotten the majority again so hoping to improve my ID skills on that front too!
