Application for Emergancy Tax Refund

Hi there, I would really appreciate any advice on my (self inflected) tax problem.

I am currently finishing my thesis for a research masters and when my funding finished in December 2011, I started to work doing labs at collage to keep me going, only a few hours a week (3-4) from Feb - June, on which I got emergency taxed, as I did not sort out my P45 etc. with the collage (yes I understand now how silly that was now....but...).

In September 2012 I accepted a full time job in the supermarket, however after 3 months I had to hand in my notice as I really needed to concentrate on getting my thesis complete. I got emergency taxed on my wages during this time too as I still didnt manage to get my P45s sorted during the period.

I put things on the long finger and was hoping to claim back all the tax once the year was over. Today while logging into my PAYE anytime account I tried to request a P21 balancing statement however it requires information from my P60 forms.

Are both my employers in 2012 obliged to send me on the p60 form ? or is there any other way to get the these forms and apply for a balancing statement?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for reading

you'll only get a P60 if you were in employment on 31 Dec 2012 and continuing into the 2013 tax year. did you get P45s from the jobs when you left them? If you are entitled to P60s (which you won't get if you already got P45s from them) you'll get them by 15 Feb 2013.

    Thanks for the reply,

No I was not working in either job on the 31st of December 2012.

I also did not give either employer any p45  !!! (I have my p45 from November 2011 sitting at home :( ).

I realise I have messed things up pretty bad. Is there any way of obtaining my p21 without going back to each employer and asking for proof of payment?

Your 2012 employers have until 15th February 2013 to furnish your 2012 earnings to the tax office .

After this , all your earnings/figures for 2012 will appear on your payeanytime , and you can then ask for P21 online .

Its too early in 2013 to expect to be able to do this now in payeanytime .

However , if you have your P45's for 2012 , then send copy to tax office now requesting a balancing statement etc for tax and USC ( if applicable and include copy of 2012 medical card if you had one )

There is no need to go back to your employers for paperwork , if you are prepared to wait another 2 months

Thanks very much for the Info.
I think I will just wait for the two months to get my money back. I shall let you know how I get on.

Thanks again, really appreciate the info!

    Hello again,

Just to bump this up again. After logging into paye anytime, I still cannot apply for a p21 balancing statement without giving details on my P60 forms which I dont have.

Is there any way of getting information on the amount of tax I paid in 2012 without going back to the employers?

    Thanks,

The only people who know your pay and tax details are your employers until such time as they file their p35s with Revenue. They should have done this by now as the deadline has passed.
If you do not have final payslips from those jobs for 2012 or p45s or p60s then you are going to have to contact the employers to get the information from them.

    Thanks for the reply,

Should my previous employers not have their p35 filed at this stage? If they have done , then should my tax info automatically be updated on PAYE anytime or does it take time for this information to be processed?

At this stage OP , it does not look like your P45 earnings are going to magically appear in your paye anytime .

When your employers issued you with P45's in 2012 , they are supposed to immediately send a copy of same to tax office , to inform them of your leaving etc.

It appears that this did not happen . - Therefore , its time to forget about payeanytime and go manual .

Send a letter to the tax office asking them to process a balancing statement for 2012 .

Outline in your letter the names and the employers that you worked for , and any other details you have , like registered numbers , date of leaving etc .

I would suspect that your Supermarket employer , probably still have you on their books , and may not have issued a P45 . - But if not they should have given you a P60 .

Thanks very much for the advice,

I was thinking this is the way to go, although secretly I was hoping that once the end of the tax year had passed it would all magically sort itself out!

    Thanks again.
