Hi this may have been asked before, did a search before but didn't see anything.

I have a 2009 car and got a letter about the NCT last week. My question is - the tax and insurance are not due until June. Do I have to get the NCT done this early or can I wait until near June?

    Thanks

When is the car due to be tested? I.e. what's the date of registration?

The car is due it's first NCT on the fourth anniversary of when it was first registered. You can do the NCT upto 6 months prior to the due date or 3 months on subsequent NCTs after that. Why do you want to wait until June when it is due now?

Tax and insurance dates may have nothing to do with the NCT date, which is based on date of first registration.

The car was bought new from a dealership in June 2009. Do dealerships register new cars before they sell them?

Do you not have to have the NCT done before you can get your tax?

The date of first registration should be listed on the car's Vehicle Licensing Cert (log book).

No, NCT is not needed for Motor Tax.
The Certificate of Road Worthiness (CRW) referred to in the tax renewal form RF101 applies to "Goods Vehicles, Trailers, Buses or Ambulances", not private cars.

Only thing you need to tax your car is insurance details.

I have a question about this. A car must be taxed in order for it to be on a public road. That includes being parked on a public road. However, a car does not need to be insured at all if it's just parked up. So, if I live somewhere that has no private parking and my car is parked on a public road, how do I renew my tax if my car is not isured?

Hypnothetical of course, as I do have a drive way...but just curious, as your car can be towed away if parked on a public road with no valid tax disc.

Normal question if you're making a claim, especially if your car was stolen. A car is worth more with an NCT for example.

I believe it has to be insured too to be on a public road.

To be parked on a public road? Are you sure? Have not heard that before.

The NCT online booking won't take my registration number. I tried every possible combination using / and also the - and also nothing and then one space and then no space.
I emailed them and after three days they sent me a message telling me my date of registration (which I had included in my email to them).
I rang and asked for a booking on the first available Friday and was told they couldn't do that and I'd have to ring again.
Has anyone else had trouble with the online booking?

Any car that is on a public road must be insured, even if it is parked up.

NCT in Galway is now booked up until March 26th.
You can get an appointment with a brain surgeon sooner.

Taxed, insured and NCT'd. And the provision for periods 'off the road' for motor tax is either gone already or about to be, i.e. if you have a summer car or are abroad for a long period you will have to tax the car to cover your absence or pay the back tax when you return. Another troika based inequity.

not the case now and wont be the case when and if the system gets altered. You will merely declare "my car is off the road from today" and then be expected to keep it off the road until it is compliant again.
