Hi all, have to head out to the airport next Monday evening and was thinking of heading out a but early and doing a time lapse of the gates (and take offs/landings if I can see them).

Does anyone know of any good viewing areas in either T1 or T2 where I can sit for an hour or two before security and have a good view of busy gates and if possible a runway in the back ground ( I know they may not be using a specific runway on the day)?

There are no viewing areas that are pre-security. If you want a good viewing area before checking in, I can suggest you to go to the Old Airport Road outside the airport's perimeter and you can watch the plane take-off and land.

Remember back in the day when you could get the escalator up the the mezzanine level and turn right and there was a big seating area where on any given Sat or Sun you might have 30 lads all plane spotting with their 10x50s and their Sigma 2 radios. To stretch your legs you could then wander down the link building and take a look at the Clyden DC3 and perhaps the odd new (for Dublin) UK registered twin or C172. Good memories.

There is a bar with a semi decent viewing area if I remember correctly. Up one level from the depatures screening area in T1, on the opposite side from the main door.

The Alcock & Brown Restaurant/Bar has a decent view of Pier B,that's about as far as it goes with views from landside in the terminal buildings.
