Someone build these in Holland, maybe not the style you're looking for. It's hard to see in the picture but the back of them looks like this so they're kinda like modern day hobbit houses. As in they're kinda underground insofar the roofs are dirt and grass. . I realise it's not in Ireland but if you think it might help I can probably find out who built them?

You can find quite a bit of adventurous and imaginative architecture in Holland.

    These were built in 1977!!!

holly crap their brilliant but about 30 ft too high above the ground for me lol.. i like the idea of the house being semi underground.. it is warmer.. not as prone to the wind if faced the right way and easier to heat..plus it blends into the surrounding area and is more pleasing on the eye

i also plan to use renewable energies such as wind power, solar power and solar heating..

its the planning and actual drawings of the project that has me stummped..

dont think my pencil and paper drawings would impress the county council planning department lol...:D

It's the same as getting planning permission for any house, you go through the same rules and regulations, so you need to check the relevant development plan for details.

    yes drunken monkey
thats the first hobbit house id seen over a year ago and the inspiration for this project along with a weird sense for unusual things and eco self sufficient living lol..

that house is in wales along with a few others..
it seems their planning laws arnt as strict as ours which i think is wrong.. to me that house is much nicer than most of the square boxes you see built around the country or in cities etc..

not only is it a cheaper way to live but would also re start the building trade in ireland even if it is on a different type of scale..

High poor uncle tom.. cool name.. thanks for the reply.. i would imagine with the type of house it is it is a bit more complicated especially since i havnt heard or seen one that has been built here so any planning department wouldnt have any type of model to compare it to.. im guessing ?

You're 100% right, they don't have any model to compare to, and there lies the problem.

Because they don't have a model to work to they shoe horn your design ideal into the regulations and rules which exist.

Personally, I believe if you can prove your design is temporary, small in scale and limited in use then it should get consideration. However I don't make the laws (just yet, anyway:D) so we are stuck with our existing planning system.

However, let me check something out and I'll report back.

I think you're right there, a friend wanted to build a log cabin and it took him years to get PP because the Co Council didn't believe that you could build a modern house from logs. He had to back up his application with a lot of proof that they are common in other countries with similar or higher planning laws.

This house is in the back end of Ballinderreen, Co. Galway. No info on it, have just always thought it looks cool!
