No idea if it's cosher. The link has been doing the rounds on some of the cycling forums for the last few hours. Looks like a beta site in testing pre launch for Garmin.

So the 500 looks like it could be going to touchscreen with the 510. How does that work on the current Edge 800? I assume it's a different sort of touchscreen to the iPhone where long finger gloves don't work?

There were several online sites doing them for that price, and they possibly still are. The ones I know of are Merlin Cycles, ProBikeKit, Halfords (possibly only available in the store, it was mentioned in a thread here in recent weeks), and Cycle Surgery too I think.

I was in Cycle Surgery in Dundrum a couple of weeks back and they had a sign up for the black (more expensive one) which I think said it was going for the same reduced rate as their UK stores were selling it for, but I was in there again on Monday of this week and they had another sign up which seemed to show the standard (blue/neutral) ones were selling for a price which was not as good as the offers in the UK.

    Edge 810

    Edge 510

    • Wireless data transfer and livetracking via smartphone connection on both devices,
    • 17 and 20hr battery life respectively,
    • GPS+GLONASS on the 510 for super satellite signal,
    • Appears 810 and 800 screens are identical so no step up in size or resolution
    • Definite step up in screen size between 500 and 510 (nearly the same no of pixels (176x220 vs 160x240) as the 810 but smaller screen (4.4 x 3.5 cm vs 3.6 x 5.5 cm) --> better appearance??)
Will be interesting to see what more is learned and comes out on youtube at CES tomorrow.

so who has bought one already ? :)

RRP for the full bundle at roughly €370, but sites are usually cheaper than this, so within a few months I reckon you'll be able to pick up a full bundle somewhere for €300 if you have a discount voucher.

Which is pretty good. It looks like rather than make the 510 a "Premium" version of the 500, they've dropped the price of the 500 and entered the 510 at that price point.

Might look at an upgrade this time next year.

Also the price of the 200 has dropped to ~€130, which is a savage price for a good GPS-enabled computer.

I'd be tempted to order the 510 if you could, just because I like new gadgets and I'm not into upgrading the mechanical components! That said, kinda struggling to justify a reason to even need the new one. Only differences I can see on the comparison on 500 vs 510 are:

    1) Slightly better battery life (mine has never died)
    2) It's black so would match my bike :)
    3) Touchscreen (could that be a pain if wearing big gloves
    4) Mobile connectivity (I just moved to Windows Mobile and I don't see that listed as an option)
    5) Bigger screen (but also therefore bigger/heavier gadget)
    6) Shock Resistant (never damaged mine with a drop but I guess a useful feature)
    7) Store waypoints/favourites (guess that could be good)

EDIT: You can now order the 510 via Irish site for € 299 not sure if incl or excl delivery. If everyone on the forum wants to contribute a euro or so I'll volunteer to test it and write a review! :pac:

Oh I reckon the Windows Mobile thing is just an app issue, i.e. there isn't one. The Nokia Lumias will make WM8 a bigger player in the mobile market, so I'd say compatibility is not far away.

I dont see any reason to upgrade from 500, it does the job of 'training tool' perfectly.

Don't think i'll be changing my Edge 800 just yet! This feels like a software update to the 800, no hardware changes.

Weather and social media Apps for Android and iPhone only, no windows phone :-\

Some great new features though, but you need your smartphone to make them work...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭Surinam

Yeah, it's fairly disappointing they don't have an app for Windows Phone yet.

There's a review on bikeradar already of the 510 and they're not overly impressed by the unit - I doubt existing edge 500 owners will be forking out the €300+ in any rush.

More detailed review on here. He doesn't seem mad about it, although he did link to this useful gadget I hadn't seen before!

I see this listed on websites now but saying end of March. Unit only is € 290 on Wiggle (assume you could get further discount with voucher), £ 240 (seems to be € 290 although may be before delivery) on Handtec and € 320 on CRC. Probably too much to really justify...:(

Comparisons of the old and new 500 series from the Garmin website.

    https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=160&compareProduct=112885&compareProduct=36728

Feature wise I don't see much advantage. Price wise the dollar list price shows your paying a $80 premium for a colour touchscreen and connectivity with smartphones.

Interestingly the comparison chart doesn't show the original Edge 500 as shockproof. Any fragility problems with these units??? I thought they were pretty robust anyway.

The retailers have had fair warning of the model change so I wouldn't expect they are hoarding, more likely the big online resellers will start discounting the new models;)

Just bit the bullet and ordered a 510 bundle from CRC. Will report back in a few weeks time.
