Films you're looking forward to in 2013?

So I've realised lately that 2013 is going to be a fantastic year for films. So many to come out that I want to see. Here's my own preliminary list, and these are just the studio-backed movies, not to mention any good smaller movies I haven't heard about yet (like this years Safety Not Guaranteed).

    In 2013 we'll have:
Man Of Steel - A new superman yay!
Oblivion - Futuristic shoot em up with Tom Cruise? I can dig it.
Jack Reacher - I don't know the story but I want to see TCs performance, he can be really good when he wants to.
Cloud Atlas - Seen it but willing/needing to go again to see it on the big screen just to make sense of it.
Pacific Rim (epic trailer) - Giant monsters vs. Giant Robots? Sign me up.
World War Z - This has the potential to be a good zombie flick. And I'll never say no to a zombie flick.
Star Trek Into Darkness - The first one was great!
Iron Man 3 - It's Iron Man...hopefully it can ride the wave of the Avengers and not suck.
The hangover part 3 - It's a predictable story but I love it anyway. Great characters.
Thor 2 - Thor 1 was superb, hopefully this can flesh out the overarching storyline with the Avengers.
Enders Game - I've heard a lot from friends about the book, and it has the potential to be fantastic.
    The Wolverine - Wolverine!
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - I loved the hobbit, and Jackson is one of my favourite filmmakers. I want to see if he can pull it off again with this trilogy. Should be terrific.

And I'm probably forgetting a few! What films are you most looking forward to?

EDIT: To keep it in charter, give some reasons and not just a list.

    Django Unchained:

Love most of Tarantino's work and I can't wait to see what he does with a western. Been looking forward to this one for a long time so hopefully it delivers.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug:

Unexpected Journey was unexpectedly good, a bit on the long side and I hated Radaghast but still a lot better than I was expecting (though of course nowhere near as good as The Lord of the Rings). Hopefully part two continues to surprise.

Other than that there's not a lot I'm looking forward to, I'll go and see Space Shooty Action Film 2 (2013) but can't say I'm awaiting it with bated breath like I should with a Star Trek film. Iron Man 3 will be seen, the first was brilliant, the second boring but again I could take it or leave it. Hopefully there'll be a few surprises throughout the year.

    Zero Dark Thirty

The story of the killing of Osama Bin Laden, looks very good if the trailers are anything to go by.

Just read up on Ender's Game and Summit are behind it, which can mean only one thing. ;)

As for me (ordered in level of interest):

    Man of Steel
    Star Trek Into Darkness
    Thor 2
    Iron Man 3
    Pacific Rim

There are a good few things I'm already looking to catch which were originally shown last year or the year before at various film festivals, but the following is a list of large releases I'm looking forward to:
    • Gangster Squad - this has a strong cast and a slick trailer; hopefully given the material it will be a hit where similar films like Public Enemies have stumbled.
    • Stoker - Mia Wasikowska hasn't impressed me in anything I've seen her in so far, but on the other hand I've enjoyed every Park Chan-Wook film I've seen so I'm definitely seeing this.
    • Lords of Salem - I've liked all of Rob Zombie's feature films so far (though Haunted World Of El Superbeasto was a bit weak), and this sounds like prime fodder for Zombie at his best.
    • Star Trek Into Darkness - the first film was frothy space-action fun; hopefully with all the character intros out of the way the sequel can up the stakes.
    • World War Z - I'm cautious on this one, the first trailer looked pretty desperate but I'll decide closer to release whether I watch it.
    • Despicable Me 2 - the first one was great fun and very funny, so I'm looking forward to the second one.
    • Pacific Rim - the trailers for Del Toro's Transformers vs Godzilla Mechas vs Monsters film look like exactly what I want of a blockbuster action film.
    • RIPD - I've only heard of the high concept pitch so far (afterlife police squad, effectively), but it sounds fun so I'm cautiously on board
    • Riddick - I adored Pitch Black but was left cold by Chronicles. Hopefully Riddick will be a return to the quality of the first film.
    • Sin City 2 - It's been ages coming, but with any luck the end result will have moved forward from the first film and introduced some new material so that those of us who've read the comics can have some surprises to look forward to.
    • The World's End - I'm a big fan of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, so there's no way I'm not seeing this.
    • Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac - weird and mental though he is, Von Trier's films are at least reliably interesting.

I'm sure there are more on top of this, but I can't think of them right now...

Blomkamp's Elysium. Finally a real science fiction movie that looks worthy of the name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭Elessar

    I KNEW I forgot a few!

Gangster Squad - The trailer came out of nowhere and looks epic. And I'd watch Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling in anything.
Elysium - Blomkamp made a stunner with District 9. Wholly original and superbly filmed, and it was really entertaining. I cannot wait for his next one. Sounds very promising.
To The Wonder - Terrence Malick is arguably one of the most visionary directors of all time, and in my opinion one of the greatest American directors still living. Tree of Life was absolutely remarkable, and although it polarized opinions on release I'm sure it will mature with time and I can see its entry into next decades "Sight and Sound" Top 10 list. Even if not, I believe it will come to be regarded as one of the greats, up there with the likes of 2001: A Space Odyssey. To The Wonder is something I simply must see.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - My favourite comedy movie gets its long awaited sequel. Have my doubt over how good it can be but it won't stop the anticipation.

Ironman 3 - Loved Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, so seeing Downey Jr. and Black work together is exciting in itself, not to mention they're working on one of my favourite movie franchises of the past number of years.

Those two are what I cannot wait for.

Also looking forward to Gangster Squad, Man of Steel, Thor 2 and Star Trek Into Darkness.

I find myself eagerly anticipating a huge selection of Japanese films I was eagerly anticipating this time last year too. Ace Attorney and Wolf Children have yet to receive their Irish premieres, while my most anticipated film of 2012 - Evangelion 3.0 - has slipped to become my most anticipated film of 2013. I can also add new titles to that list of Nippon exports, with Land of Hope and an extremely exciting Miyazaki / Takahata double bill due too. The latter would perhaps be a wiser bet for 2014 :/ Story of Yonosuke is the up-and-coming Shuichi Okita's next film, and due a release here in September or so - can't wait for that after the gems that were Chef of South Polar and Woodsman and the Rain (due a DVD release very soon indeed - well worth checking out as it never received Irish screenings last year).

The Last Stand is due soon. **** the return of Arnie - I'm there for the return of Jee-woon Kim! Stoker is also well up there. Curious to see how these excellent Korean auteurs fare Stateside. I am optimistic both will offer the subversive genre thrills we've come to expect.

We potentially have several Terence Malick releases on our hands in 2013, although again safe bet is on To The Wonder being the only one to be granted a wide release. We can hope against hope that 2013 will be the year of not one but two or three new film's from a great director who was once the least prolific of them all.

Inside Llewellyn Davis sounds like a fascinating project from the Coens. It's perhaps too much of a stretch to hope Spike Jonze or - more excitingly - Charlie Kaufman will make their belated returns this year. Curious to see if Michel Gonry's Mood Indigo will break his slightly distressing streak of disappointments.

I don't know if Asghar Farhadi's A Separation follow-up will emerge this year, but I'm hoping it does so he can try for 'film of the year' for three years in a row.

Zero Dark Thirty and Django Unchained should hopefully brighten up cold, dank January a bit. Looking forward to them both.

I won a season pass for JDIFF this year. I cannot wait to gorge on films for two weeks solid like I've never gorged before.

Can't wait for Andrew Bujalski Computer Chess, and wasn't there a thread a few weeks ago about Shane Carruth's sophomore feature ;)

I'm sure there's more that will be flagged in due course as festival season arrives. As always, it will be those ones that arrive from left field that will likely prove the most exciting of all! You never know what a year in film will throw at you. Well, bar the usual franchise entries, but that's a given.

    Yep! Think thats everything covered.

Let's not forget Kickass 2 though, on its way in July with Jim Carrey

Here's hoping it's as good as the first.

Forgot about Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity. If the incredible Children of Men is anything to go by this could be one of the highlights of the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭SVG

Wow! There's lots to look forward to this year but without a doubt the film I'm most looking forward to is Stoker. Park Chan-Wook's films are always gorgeous to behold and this looks like no exception.

After that probably Zero Dark Thirty. I loved The Hurt Locker and this looks to be in the same territory.

And don't crucify me for this but I have already watched the trailer for Pain and Gain more times than I'll care to admit:o. I know- it's a Michael Bay film but it sorta looks like a David O. Russell Michael Bay film.

As well as some of the big ones (like Man of Steel, Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness), I have to mention Cianfrance's The Place Beyond The Pines.

Written and directed by the man behind Blue Valentine, it's gotten a great reaction so far and a cracking cast in Gosling, Mendes, Cooper and Liotta. Something gritty to get stuck into in March.

    Sin City 2
    Kick Ass 2(if it comes)
    Man Of Steel
    Pacific Rim
The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug (although my biggest gripe with the hobbit was more how it was shot than the story so im not so sure on this one)
    The Place Beyond The Pines

I had absolutley no interest In The Last Stand until I heard Jee-woon Kim was involved. Looking forward to Stoker but not quite to the same extinct.

World War Z: Was lucky enough to visit the set a few times and love a good zombie flick! However considering the production hell its in I don't have my hopes set too high.

Django Unchained: Tarantino tackling a western? Yes please.

Don Jon's Addiction: Yes I'll admit it I'm just watching this for a beefy JGL :D

Oz The Great and the Powerful: Raimi's first film in around 4 years, really loved the story as a child so hopefully it'll be good. Definitely one I'll have to see in the cinema! Also haven't seen anything (decent) with James Franco in a loooong time.

Also looking forward to seeing how Gravity turns out considering the numerous cast changes etc

Dunno if I'll go and see Superman, I have no love for that superhero! However with Chris Nolan on board I could be surprised...

A few film films which haven't been mentioned yet:

The Counsellor - Ridley Scott directing, Michael Fassbender staring, from a script by Cormac McCarthy.

The Wolf of Wall Street - Latest Scorsese/DiCaprio collaboration about corruption in the financial world.

Before Midnight - Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke return in the follow-up to Before Sunrise/Before Sunset, this time set in Greece.

The Grandmaster - Kar Wai Wong's long awaited martial arts film staring Tony Leung.

Noah - Darren Aronofsky's big budget biblical epic with Russel Crowe, Anthony Hopkins and Jennifer Connelly.

Upstream Colour - Mysterious science fiction drama from the director of Primer.

Vanishing Waves - Erotic sci-fi film along the lines of The Cell, but looks far more intriguing.

The East - Another mysterious Brit Marling scripted drama about an anarchist group.

Thor: The Dark World - The title's a bit stupid, but the 1st one was good.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - Yes.
Kick-Ass 2 - Liked the first one, but I read the comic and I've a feeling they'll cut out a lot of stuff.
