After doing all my game / rough shooting so far with a o/u , I am cosidering looking at a s/s as they are supposed to be a lighter and some say better / more suitable game gun because of the weight, any comment lads?

I personally never liked looking down a side by side always preferred an o/u myself

S/S - lighter and faster handling , don't open over such a wide angle (a o/u has to open wider to get the bottom barrel to clear the standing breech) so better in a hide. A 6lb 20 or 16 bore side by side is perfect imho for rough shooting.

Side by side is a lighter gun alright, I use one for game shooting and its a mighty yoke. But like all guns if it doesn't fit its going to be useless.

I can't shoot with O/U'sThe SXS suits me better I think.

s/s are much faster to reload than a o/u which is a big bonus :)

Hoping to purchase one in the new year, my only problem is the stocks seem to be very short on them, certainly lighter/faster to use. had the beretta sxs was shooting a bit low with it, back using u/o, regret it now, may have to get a longer stock made

Why is that I'm guessing the bottom barrel clearing the stock

    Liffy

Regardless of how you slice it, doubles have a mystique second to none, Boss H&H, Purdey et al made sure of that, :), but unlike much that is wrapped in mystique, they also can produce. They carry well in the field, and there is just something magic about the click when the barrels are joined to the action, and the forend snaps into place.

For field use side-by-side barrels have a broader and more quickly-acquired sighting plane. Although one should always concentrate on the target and not the gun, in field shooting, having subliminal consciousness of the position of the barrels is a real aid to throwing the shot towards a suddenly-appearing moving target. Side-by-side guns are easier to load, a distinct advantage in a duck blind/hide and heavy cover.

Over and under barrels have a narrower sighting plane. They allow a more precise view and allow slightly better peripheral vision. Over & under guns are more suitable for shooting clays, where one generally knows where and when the target will be presented.

First shot out of a sxs (was uncles i didnt have gun at time)i dropped a snipe. Have used it few times now and couldn't hit an elephant with it. Must have been just luck but I couldn't hit much with it or neither could he,even straight forward shots

The classic forend on a sxs is but a small sliver of wood that encloses the metal forend iron. Not intended to be gripped, its purpose is to hold the gun together. When shooting, the barrels themselves lie where they belong right in the shooter's leading hand. By having the barrels in the leading hand the tendency is to point them better and consequently be a better marksman in the field.

I own both a s/s and a o/u sporter, I do most of my shooting with the o/u simply cos it's more versatile and I believe in getting used to one gun and shooting well with it. The s/s is a pleasure to walk with however, it's light and the action shape sits comfortable on the arm, they do handle very well also. If your buying a gun a good s/s will cost you a bit more than an o/u, AYA are probably the best reasonbly priced s/s out there, they are hugely popular Spainish made copies of British designs.
