    Hi all

Looking for some ideas for family of 5 holiday (kids 6,8,13) in July. We've keycamped our way through france, germany, italy, spain, portugal, Lanzarote the last 13 years & would love this time to get an apartment or villa on a resort with maybe an option of kids club (not neccessary though). I always wanted to go to Croatia but can't seem to find any family resorts. Budget is about €3000 for flights & accom. €4000 if all inclusive.. Would love to go somewhere different as the kids are getting older but need somewhere within our budget. Also because we're going in July (school hols) don't want the kids to melt! Any ideas or recommendations would be gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks

Turkey? although it is not the first place people think of when they think camping there are some great campsites in Turkey. And villa's etc are easy to come by if you prefer that. If you want to avoid the standard package holiday atmosphere I would recommend Datca (fly into Bodrum or Dalyan), Cesme (fly to Izmir with Aer Lingus) or some of the smaller resorts on the Bodrum penninsula such as Gemusluk, Turgutreis, Akbuk or Mavisehir or Sagtur (all three just outside Altinkum). You can rent a nice traditional style Turkish villa on a Sitesi in all of those areas and they are not overrun with tourist bars. But yet, all are within a short bus ride of markets, bars and nightlife if that is what you want.

If you do want to go package then you could get one for your budget easily enough. Although I would not recommend AI in Turkey as eating out is cheap and easy and the food is great. Most of the hotels that do AI cater for european tastes and not very well at that, so if you want good food I would recommend you go S/C.

In a very similar situation myself (4 of us including kids 12 and 10), we have already booked return flights to Dubrovnik (don't fancy Ryanair) and I'm planning on hiring a car, driving up the coast straight away as far as Split where there appears to be a decent campsite near Strobec, stay there for a week, then head back down towards Dubrovnik (about 3/4 of the way) and rent a more luxurious apartment for another week on the coast or on an island.

In the meantime, we'll be able to tour around, go to the islands (Hvar, Brac, Korcula) and perhaps take in Mostar and maybe even Cavtat/Montenegro towards the end of the holiday. In Croatia I believe you need to be mobile to get the most of a holiday (I could never lie on a sunbed beside a pool for 2 weeks anyway).

The OP is correct in that there doesn't appear to be too many tourist complexes aimed at families in Croatia but I personally think that's a good thing. Not advisable to stay around Dubrovnik as there's not much there except for the old town which can be done in a day or 2.

It really depends on where you go. Cesme would probably be the least hot, as it is further up the Aegean coast (about 27-30 land temp and about 24 sea temp) - avoid the Med coast as it will be hotter there. And I suppose it also depends on what you class as hot? its all relative really. I lived there for a few years, so to me August and its 45-50 degree heat is hot. After that, 30 degrees is moderate, good beach weather and yet you can still sightsee at the right times of the day (early morning and evenings). 25 degrees and I feel like its still spring and its too cold for the beach and perfect for shopping and sightseeing!
