Central base in the Scottish Highlands?

    I am planning a holiday for my husband and myself (30's) and my parents (70's) and was thinking of a week in the Scottish Highlands. Ideally I would like a single base with day trips as we like to stay self catering and most self catering places have a minimum stay of a week. We will be sailing into Cairnryan so ideally we would like somewhere 4-5 hours drive from there.

    So can anyone recommend a town we could use as a base that has a few nice shops and restaurants and would be within 2 hours of some nice scenic areas of the Highlands? Plus what would the 'must see' sights in the highlands?
