    Hi,

I have a 58-8 Callaway Jaws X Series lob wedge which I'm really pleased with, I love the feel, weight etc. I'm now toying with the idea of getting the 54-12 gap wedge as a replacement for the 54 degree sand wedge which came with my irons. I quite like the sand wedge but feel the 54-12 Jaws will be a lot more useable but I'm not sure whether it can/should be used as a sand wedge i.e. for bunker play. Will it function well in bunkers? Will using it in bunkers damage the clubface or reduce it's functionality/spin when used off eh fariway/light rough?

I hope this isn't too dumb a question!!!

12 degrees is a reasonable amount of bounce and you should have no issues using a club like this in the sand. It's possible to use any club in the sand if you know how bounce works and how the club interacts with the sand.

What club are you using in the sand at the moment?

Using the club in the bunker won't reduce it's spin from the fairway unless you are spending an inordinate amount of time practicing in the bunker.

OP I have 52 and 58degree jaws wedges, they are great out of bunkers and if anything produce too much spin out of the sand. Buy a groove sharpener and use every 6 months if you are worried about the grooves loosing their sharpness. I personally find low bounce wedges difficult to use especially in parkland courses where I play the majority of my golf.

    Thanks guys,

The SW that came with my set of irons (Callaway Big Bertha's from 2002) doesn't state what it's bounce is but it's got a pretty fat sole so I'm guessing there's a lot of bounce on it. Here's a picture of the same club - http://www.2ndswing.com/p-126846-callaway-2002-big-bertha-wedge-sand-sw-54-graphite-regular-left.aspx I'm very comfortable playing it from the sand and from +/- 85 yards as well as for little chip and runs around the green but it has no spin whatsoever and very little 'feel' so I'm very tempted to replace it with a Jaws X Series 54-12 as I think that will give me the same range of shots but with more control and more spin.

BTW, the Callaway Jaws wedges are on special offer for €59 in Halpenny golf in Carrickmines at the moment ;)
