    moving to Scotland and will need one - what department would be in charge of this and can I ring before I leave in 2 week so I can get interview a.s.a.p. Will I be able to take up employment while waiting?

    You either need to be living in the uk OR working in the uk. You can't apply for one from the ROI without a job.

    Once you have a uk address/job getting the NINo is easy. Just phone up jobcentre plus and they'll arrange an interview which is more or less a formality.

    Oh, and yes, you can take up employment while waiting. You're already entitled to work in the UK as you're an Irish citizen anyway.

    Like Tony81 says. All you need to do is call the Jobcentre Plus Helpline. They will arrange an Evidence of Identity interview. A list of documents acceptable to HMRC is also on the website.

    Once the interview's done and HMRC are satisfied with the evidence, an NI no. is usually issued within a month.

    No. You have to have an NI no. before you can work. Same as here.

    Not correct. After applying for nino you'll get a letter to say you applied and you can start working.

    It might be the policy of a particular employer. In particular, recruitment agencies (in certain sectors) won't want to know you if you don't have one. However, legally it's fine to work while you're waiting on the NINo.

    All you need is proof of address and identification.I got mine there in december and just told them im actively seeking work.
