I was wondering if there's anybody who knows anything about the exact location of a place in Cork City called Gallagher's Lane, off Old Youghal Road?It appears on the census in 1901 but there are only 2 houses recorded on the lane and I cannot locate it on any map I've seen, so I dont know if it still exists or if it has been renamed but I would be very interested to hear anything that anybody might know about it. Thanks

I looked on that page but although there's a few lanes recorded as being off Old Youghal Road, there doesnt seem to be any mention of Gallagher's Lane

This doesn't narrow it down much but the Enumerators form puts it in the north east ward which starts at Audley Place and on the OYR runs as far as tinkers cross, so it rules out the lower part of the hill which is in the north west ward. The same form puts it in the civil parish of St. Annes Shandon, I thought this would narrow it down to the western end but in fact St. Annes goes out to Rathcooney parish probably around tinkers cross also (though I can't find this on a map).
I've checked the OSI Historical maps (not shown on these) and Goads fire maps (they don't cover the OYR).
It is possible that Gallaghers lane was not formally called that, so is not marked on a map, Gallagher could have been the landlord or something and it's even possible that it had different names a generation earlier and a generation later when that person died or sold the property.

It is strange also that Gallagher's Lane does not seem to appear on the 1911 census. One of the families listed there in 1901 seem to be in Charleville Cottages in 1911 - I think that might be close to Collins Barracks.
The Atlas Of Cork City references a document called The Cork Civic Survey which was published in 1926 and contained many maps so that might be useful if you can find a copy in a library. Also a placename survey for Cork was started in 1996 (http://www.placenames.ie/). If you can track this down it might help you.

I had a quick look in the reference section of Douglas library the other day but couldn't see anything on Gallagher's Lane. It might be worth throwing out a query on the Cork City forum
