Officials in South Africa have launched an investigation after the deaths of seven jobseekers who collapsed in the heat while undergoing a fitness test for positions as traffic officers.
The chief transport official for KwaZulu-Natal province, Willies Mchunu, has suspended further tests.
The state-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation reported that several tens of thousands of people took the fitness test late last week, even though only 90 jobs were available.
They were required to run 2.5 miles in temperatures of more than 30C, and many collapsed from dehydration and heat exhaustion. Some received hospital treatment.
South Africa’s official statistics show that the unemployment rate is 25 per cent, an indication why so many were applying for the 90 jobs.

****ing hell. No dole scroungers there!

No dole scroungers but plenty of murder, rape, carjackings, mass killings, vigilantism and people being burnt alive. :)

Would you say the same after the numerous reports of huge numbers of Irish people applying for entry-level jobs which were featured on the news?

That biometric screening to prevent fraud looks the business. I'm guessing very expensive but makes sense in the long run.

How does that suggest no dole in SA. When I was unempolyed last year, one job in the north west I applied for received about 500 applicants, with only about 4-5 positions up for grabs.

But would you have run 2.5 miles in 30 degrees for the job?

The job I was applying for did not require such a task, nor does this country experience such weather. I'm sure SA is used to such weather, and if a fitness test is required then why not.

This still does not suggest SA does not have the dole, or social welfare, its just a sign that so many people are desperate for work.

I was taking 4-5 hour round journeys when I was going for interviews, so does many others currently trying to find work, its a sign of the times despite our 'generous' welfare system.

In fairness its a long way to go to sign on every week.

Wouldn't really be worth the hassle.

I don't get it. No dole but an unemployment rate of 25%? I thought that if there was no dole that automatically meant full employment? Or have I been reading AH for too long?

Unemployment and poverty amongst the lower class is rife in S.A.
Was in Pretoria in 09,and when heading to the supermarket one morning we stopped at traffic lights and you have beggars coming up knocking on your windows looking for a couple of rand, that and the amount of people just standing on street corners or roundabouts waiting to be picked(i.e if you needed to get a bit of painting, grass cut etc just pick em up and give a few rand).
Not to mention the acres and acres of townships.
So if there where a few jobs going id say most would run the length of Africa never mind a few miles to be employed.
