I need a bit of advice.
I failed in my attempt to remove a CV joint on a 98 Corolla today in order to replace the boot.
I seem to recall doing this a few years ago by giving it a couple of whacks, I can't see any clip keeping it in place, am I missing something or am I not whacking it hard enough.

Those old Toyota outer CV joints can be next to impossible to remove from the shaft. We have a special tool for removing outer cv joints which is basically a slide hammer and even it regularly fails to remove Toyota CV joints. If you can't get the outer CV joint off then either fit a stretch type boot or else remove the inner CV joint and replace the boot from that end.

I agree with George, "either fit a stretch type boot or else remove the inner CV joint and replace the boot from that end"

But recently I had to renew an outer cv joint, it was on tight i used the "pipe trick" to remove it. The internal snap ring will break with this method, but one should come with the new joint.

    Id go along with that.

I worked at a Toyota dealer a good few years back and they were always done from the inside.

Usually next to impossible to remove.

The problem is the little circlip on the end of the driveshaft, it wears a burr into the groove that it sits in and won't recompress to allow the CV joint to slide off.
As others have said, just take the tripod joint off the inside, its only a boot clip to remove it, slide it out and off the driveshaft.
