BMW E90 N46 error code P1048

    Hi all,

I'm getting the error code P1048 thrown on an E90 318i
    P1048 VVT-Control Circuit Low Input (Bank 1)

It looks like its possibly the VVTI actuator, or possibly the wiring going to it. I'll have a look over the wiring tomorrow, but i'm suspecting the actuator motor itself.

Does anyone know if there's anything else I should check before sourcing a replacement actuator?

Is there any trick to swapping out the actuator and setting up the new one?

    thanks

Switch the inlet & outlet actuator to see if the fault follows the switch. These solenoids are about €90 from the main dealer. Is your Check Engine light on too?

On the N52 engine at least, they are held in with one 10mm bolt, simple job to replace: unplug, unbolt, pull out, refit.

    Hi,

thanks for the reply, I think my original post might be a bit confusing. I believe that error actually refers to the Valvetronic motor, hopefully someone on here can confirm.

Yea the check engine light came on this evening and code P1048 is being thrown all the time.

I should be able to measure the resistance of the motor winding tomorrow morning with a meter.

Fair enough, the VVTi as you are calling it is called VANOS in BMW speak, there are little actuators on the inlet & exhaust camshaft a that control the timing variation for each.
Here's what the solenoid looks like:

Here's a write up of my issue:

Maybe I have your issue confused but these are the items that "work" the vanos unit.

    Hi

Thanks for the reply, I've actually cleaned / swapped the two vanos solenoids before on one of these.

But I think the P1048 error code relates to the valvetronic motor, I found the following for the N55 engine:-

P1048 VVT-Control Circuit Low (Bank 1) Valvetronic (VVT) Control Motor

    Potential problem source(s):
    - Defective wiring harness
    - Replace Valvetronic actuator motor

The driver circuit is deactivated when a fault is suspected. The diagnostic fault code is logged when the
voltage measured during diagnosis is less than 0.2 V and the voltage behind the Valvetronic relay is greater
    than 6 V.

This fault is logged in the Voltage condition:
    - Onboard electrical system voltage between 9 V and 16V
    Temperature condition:
    - None
    Time condition:
    - None

Other conditions: - Check wiring harness between Valvetronic
MY10 ECE: - ECE emissions warning lamp: off
    - ECE electronic engine power reduction: on
    - CC message: on MY11 US:
    - US emissions warning lamp: on
    - US electronic engine power

    Possible apparent symptoms:
If the malfunction occurs while the VVT system is not at its maximum stroke position, the engine stalls/vehicle breaks down. Engine will not restart, as the VVT driver circuit is deactivated and the VVT system reverts to minimum stroke. If the fault occurs at MEVD17.2- BN2000 0x2DC0 11712

Valvetronic servomotor, activation: Short circuit to earth actuator motor's three phases for a short circuit to ground.

I'd say most likely your VVT module.
Unlikely wires, but you never know, worth checking right.
Is the car running poorly and even starting up properly or not?

Reset your DDE adaptation first, and see if it comes back immediately or not.

I have 2013 BMW dealers tools if you need me, not the Internet INPA bla bla, you know where to find me.
