hello, my golf 00 tdi has the STOP light on. long story, but it ran out of coolant, I replaced it and thought it would fix the problem(naively) and the light is still on. also the hot air is not running through the car now. im thinking the thermostat needs replacing now? does this sound anyway familiar to anyone? I have the tools and space to do it at home, id rather not bring it to a garage if at all possible as the xmas has me skint!
    thanks people

How long was it driven without coolant really hope not long cause you could have cooked the engine

no, the missus had it and she reckons it over heated a chap refilled it with water and it got her home. i refilled it with coolant thereafter. ive driven it a little since and it drives fine

Assuming you didnt run the engine without coolant, and havent done harm, have you bled it?

Press the rubber pipes ( squeeze them are they rock solid)

I'd say its the water pump to be honest. And u will be lucky if you haven't blown the head gasket. Either way get a mechanic to confirm if its the pump the thermostat or the head gasket

If you can't squeeze pipes thats not good. but as other poster said would be worth getting it a proper health check

Just wondering, but how did it have no coolant? Was there a slow leak?

As I've already stated I'd say the water pump is gone hence no coolant

I mean was the car losing coolant gradually, eg was the head gasket munthered already
