Myself and my husband hope to do the whole stay in a log cabin by a lake cliche, go whale watching etc. We have a travel agent looking in to it for us but does anyone here in the know have any recommendations for us on where might be good places to go? And when is the best time of year? We are thinking July because of time off, would that be a good time? Budget not overly a big concern really, looking for a trip of a lifetime more than a cheap holiday. Thanks for any info.

Try and fit in the Rockies. The drive between Banff and Jasper is amazing and unforgettable!

If you can Fly into Calgary or Edmonton then go to Jasper and drive towards Banff. At Lake Louise and Jasper you can rent Log cabins to stay in. You can then drive or get the train to Vancouver and you can go on whale watching trips from there and go on sea plane tours of the area.

May is generally the cheapest time for flights, in May it would be getting warm but some of the ski resorts may be open depending on the weather that year. July the flights are quite expensive and the weather would be 25-30 degrees depending on where you go to.

Try Canadian affair they are the cheapest for flights and they do fly drive holidays aswell.

I lived out in the Rockies for a few months at Moraine Lake. Try somewhere like Moraine Lake Lodge. There's only about 20 cabins and they are all just a stones throw from the lake. It's only about a 15 minute drive down to its ugly sister, Lake Louise. There's a massive Fairmont hotel in Lake Louise which you can see in the picture but all the other accommodation in Lake Louise is not around the lake. The other accommodation is in Lake Louise village. The cabins in the village are nice but Lake Louise village is tiny, it has a petrol station, an off licence, a shop about as big as a Centra and a few touristy shops.

Banff/Lake Louise is a good base as you are near to places like Peyto Lake, Lake O'Hara etc. Bring your hiking boots and you'll see the most amazing scenery. There's other stuff to do like white water rafting, caving, mountain biking if you're into that kind of stuff.

If you're doing the Rockies definitely rent a car or do what a lot of Canadians do, rent a RV. Start up in Jasper and head down towards Banff, Canmore and Lake Louise. There's no shortage of anywhere to stay in Banff. You're not going to see any whales unless you head to Vancouver. It's about 13 hours on a bus from Lake Louise, you could probably do it in 10/11 hours in your own car. There's a lot of nice places to stop along the way as well like Golden, Revelstoke and Kelowna in BC.

The weather in the Rockies can still be cold in summer. It can get up to 25-30 during the day but it can get really cold at night. I've been snowed on in May, June, July, August and September.
