hi all - I know this isn't a medical thread and I'm not looking for any medical advice, just wanted to see if others have had this issue..........

took up running as last year's new year's resolution and by June was running for an hour (20 mins x 3 - with 2 x 3 min breaks.........following a 5 - 10k program)........got a chest infection in June so that ballsed that up for a few weeks and have never managed to get back to that level of running. Just to clarify it was all road running and I did experience some hip pain.

I got back into the 5k plan in July and then in September was lucky enough to have 'inherited' a treadmill for home and have joined a gym at work (I'm based away from home during the week), so now back to running a continuous 30 minutes a day 4 - 5 times a week.

Here's the nub of my issue, I'm starting to experience some lower back pain - a few hours after running, and in the past few days, it's been extremely uncomfortable so I didn't run today and was going to knock it on the head for tomorrow and maybe knock it down to maybe 15 or 20 minutes for the rest of the week.............just wanted to see if others have experienced this issue, and how they dealt with it

not sure if it's of any material matter - I'm 37, female - BMI is 23.8 and I have good Asics runners, I don't have any hip pain that I had from the road running, but this back pain is quite new................would be delighted with any feedback

Everyone has different reasons for their pains. some reasons can be bad posture when running or not wearing the right type of shoe whether the brand is good or not. it can also be related to sitting in a chair all day in work and not stretching before and after a run or improper use of gym equipment. You have to figure it out but id look stretching and warming up and down. id also think about a gait analysis to see if youre in the right footwear.

I always suffered from stiffness in my lower back after running for a long time but late last year it finally gave out on me with the result I had to stop for over a year.
Started back a few weeks ago using almost flat running shoes and I've had no problems whatsoever.

If you need a recommendation to sort this out for you in Cork then I can give you one. I got sorted after going to 5 physio's and getting a cortisone shot which I didn't need.

I work in an office all day and all my pain is from that and not from running. I have not have a running injury in over a year thank god.

Earlier this year I initially had hip pain and then lower back pain. Eventually I saw a physio and it all seemed related to an IT Band issue. It was mainly resolved with lots and lots of stretching and foam rolling. Maybe google IT Band and see if any of it ties in with your situ. Totally fixable is it is.

folks, thanks so much for the responses - pain is persisting today though not as serious...........Rom, that would be great if you could send me on those details, I'm also going to look up IT Band, but if it turns out to be a rock band made of IT Analysts, I won't be impressed (well, I actually would be!) :-)

I've got lower back pain as we speak! I get it occasionally but I'm confident it is not running related and more to do with my posture which can be really poor at times. It usually lasts for the guts of a week and then goes away.

Hope you get to the root of your problem.
