what size of diesel engine are you looking for in an A4 or golf if a 1.9 is too expensive?

I can't say I'd agree, everyone and their mother wants 320d's, most around are pure muck imo. Maybe a 318 alright.

Its basically the same engine thats in a diesel A4 or golf. 1.9 is the smallest diesel engine they have in that era car.

I have a mondeo that im selling. 04with lots of test and a bit of tax. Very high spec also. A bit along with 3000 would buy it. Pm me if interested

That 1.9 TDI in any guise apart from the PD is notorious as a great diesel powerplant with really nice torque (The 130bhp version being the peach but the 110 being great too)

    The 130 was PD.

Then i must be thinking of the 170+ bhp 2.0 unit PD giving trouble as the 130bhp was not a troublesome unit from what ive heard

Yeah the injectors were an issue on the 2.0 170's, OP you are not going to get a low tax/Diesel VAG for 3k you'll be paying the higher rate, you should possibly look at a focus c-max 1.6 TDCI if your looking for space, low tax and diesel.. nice colour IMO.

The pd were not very troublesome. The lack of servicing affected them but that will be the care with any engine! The 90 and 110 were non pd. Pd were 100 105 115 130 and 150. 2.0L pd were 140 and 170. Some of these gave injector trouble

So what are you looking at? 1.6 petrol Audi A4 that'll drink the fuel so what you save on tax you more than spend on petrol?

    Diesel Toledo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭TGi666

If it were me I would just get a 99/00 golf for around €1500 and use the rest for tax insurance and youd still have a few quid to fix anything that might crop up, but I would be looking for one that has had the flywheel done recently

There is about €250 a year difference in tax between that car and a 1.4 of the same age. Tax on anything up to a 2 litre is not (within reason) that high, and should not deter from at least considering a better car with a slightly bigger engine. For the kind of budget you have I would far sooner spend the extra couple of hundred quid a year to get a good 1.9 than an average 1.4.

I don't see how the OP hopes to buy a diesel A4 or Golf without paying motor tax on a 1.9 litre engine.

Who said I wasnt going to pay tax. I like the focus. The family I'm on about is 5 adults in the car at one time.

when a 1.9 TDi car was offered up to you.

i'd give the focus a miss tbh. weren't the 1.6 TDCi very ****? personally with that budget, a mk1 focus with the 1.8 TDDi would be my choice. buy a decent one and put 6 months tax in the window for 2k, keep my bank account healthy with the other 1000 :)

You want a diesel A4 or Golf but don't want a Seat with the same engine because it has "high" tax. The A4 and Golf cost the same to tax, did I miss something else?

Small capacity diesel engines in those type cars didn't arrive until much later and are well outside your budget.

That is not how I meant it. The 3000 is for a car alone so it can be

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭TGi666

if you don't want to pay the 1.9tax with your budget you might be able to pick up a 1.4 hdi 206/307

I think a 206/clio/fiesta type car would be very uncomfortable with 5 adults in it. You would at least want a 307/focus sized car and at that it would be a squeeze

I know what you mean Sean just the OP may just take the tax on the chin, seems a Passat/mondeo would be the best option for 5 adults and there bags and baggage
