    Hello,

I would like to have my own custom email address that is connected to my registered domain. So for example...john@hellojohn.com

Do I need a host in order to do this or just a registered domain? Google Apps charges now. Any ideas?

Not sure if this will be much help but I use blogger.com through my site and I purchased my domain through it. I got my domain and it came with the free email. You could import your domain to Blogger and do it that way which might be easier but I'm no expert!

Where did you register your domain OP? They may offer free email using their services.

Buy a domain and basic hosting package from Blacknight and that will include email hosting.

    http://www.blacknight.com/minimus-hosting.html

Of you can buy a domain from anyone and do an MX record change to point at Gmail

The status of this approach is currently unknown.

Domains purchased via Blogger made use of Google Apps. Now that Apps isn't free any more, there may be some hiccups.

Let's stay away from any named hosting recommendations.

OP, you can find what you're looking for by www.google.ie/search?q=how+to+get+personalised+email+address
There are a few companies that offer the service you seem to be looking for.

If you already own a domain it's just a matter of finding a host package with mail option (most have this option).

Windows Live for Domains is free for up to 500 users with a limited amount of storage space (I think it's whatever storage you typically get via hotmail/live mail/outlook.com).

When you sign up you just provide your domain name, and it will guide you through the set up that you need to do from your domain providers control panel.
