I am after a very economical vehicle for work as have a fair distance to travel.
I see the corsa 1.3cdti ecoflex gives great miles per gallon.
Engines are not suppose to be that reliable but maybe have improved on these newer ones

    Whats your opinions

I wouldn't like to be stuck in a corsa/clio/micra for 600 miles a week. As above go for a bigger car. Even a 1.6 hdi pug 307, 407 would be worth looking at.

I's agree with Sean a 1.6 407 should be handy on juice and it would also be a nice comfortable motor

I know some of them had a dpf but i dont think they all did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭TGi666

Cant load it up now but at 600 miles a week the dpf should be kept happy and liquid moly have a additive you add to the fuel tank to keep the dpf toped up although I'll have to check later on that

I think that your thinking along the lines of smallest engine automatically equals the best fuel economy. For the most part in town and city driving and for short spins they certainly are.

However, if your doing circa 600 miles per week chances are your going to be doing considerable driving on motorways and national primary roads. A lot of driving at 60 to 70 mph in the likes of a 1.3 litre corsa is not saving you fuel I reckon. The engine in such a small engined car is spinning at a very high rate at these speeds. So much so that your most likely getting much better fuel economy in a car with a much greater engine capacity.

I think too that with many people following your own train of thought there is serious demand for these small diesel engine cars out there. So much so that the asking prices of them is probably a bit inflated.

I'm not sure what your insurance situation is but if its not a determining factor I'd be more inclined to be looking towards the likes of a 1.6/ 1.8 diesel focus/ 1.7 diesel astra. You'd be paying a bit more in motor tax and insurnace might be a bit higher but that might be more than offset by the initial cost of the car too. You'd have a bit more comfort for yourself too for doing that kind of mileage.

Consider the Renault Fluence along with the others as its good value.

600 miles a week in a car the size of a Corsa will be painful, you need to consider comfort as well as fuel economy OP. Bigger cars have more comfortable seats and more space and are nearly as frugal on long journeys.

Just out of interest what car do you have now OP?

I have a 2003 astra 2.0 dti diesel, hard on fuel and high tax but never give me any trouble and other half has passat 130bhp tdi which is breaking our hearts,

A Hyundai i30 or Kia Cee'd 1.6 Diesel. Both are the same cars underneath with the same engine and are very reliable cars. I would be expecting either to do around 55mpg.
