Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Had the ewes scanned today and ended up about 190%:D:D - 142 twins, 16 triplets, 20 singles and 5 empty - not expecting anywhere near that result as they were drinking water when they were being supposed to be being flushed. Scanner man was very surprised as he said he's seeing high numbers of empty ewes in the country and was talking to a few neighbours who have p'd their sucklers and the empty rates are running about 10%. Anyone else scanning at the minute?

Scanned first 50 out of 120 today, very dissappointing return...worst since we started scanning around 10 years ago.7 empty,18 singls,25 twins.Scanner covers wide area,Mayo to Cavan and is finding a lot of poor returns. Our ewes in excellent shape, scanner says a lot of men putting it down to lack of proper sunshine all last year.Hopefully other 70 go a bit better.
Wonder if it would pay to feed and kill the empty ewes in a months time?.Are in fairly good shape.

A Suffok,Texal and Charlois ram,and the same kind of ewes, normally get scanning results of about 1.8 or so,never been less than that. we keep all our own replacements, havent bought any females for at least 15years.
Havent been over 2% since about 12 years ago when we had some Belclare x ewes, had 2.3% then,we had bad experience of them though, very proflic but way too lively, small and lambs born were tiny.
I was abit anxious this year because the Texal ram had a sore leg just before mating and the ewes didnt go out to as good a sward as normal.

1 ewe lamb scanned with triplets:eek:, I doubt if that will end well..

    Hello,

    We scanned 75 here yesterday.

    Triples - 9
    Doubles - 40
    Singles - 22
Empty - 4 (2 of these were ewe lambs)

    1.72%

I know its not the highest, but I am happy enough with it (given the result I had last year, its a big improvement)

I asked the man scanning about what he's seeing - and he said results are the same as most years...

What did you scan last year UJ? What breeds are you running? i seen from previous posts you used some lick buckets this year, do you reckon they have helped

    Hi Razor8,

Jesus, last year it was 1.4 or something depressing... I had a lot of empty ewes...

I have mainly Suffolk ewes (one or two Charolais cross in there as well), and this year I have Hampshire Down rams.

    Changes I made this year
    - Better fluke dosing program
    - Gave the ewes cobalt a few times before mating
    - Mineral buckets with the sheep during flushing & on and off during mating

I would think the fluke doing maybe made the biggest difference, but its hard to know.

I got the Crystalyx buckets just today actually, so put them out, we'll see what the ewes make of em... Grass is running very tight, will start feeding em a bit of ration next week I'd say...

    A

Scanned other 70 a fortnight ago.
    4 Triplets,
    42 Twins,
    20 singles,
    4 dry.
So thats 11 dry outta 120 which is v high for us,but rams were left with them so hopefully theres a few late lambs there.

Scanned 180 at 195%, scanned 160 at Christmas at 175%.....only 3 barren on the 340, so happy enough. The 160 were picked for breeding replacements and were supposed to be the better ones, so its really all luck because even at this stage the 160 look much better sheep, 10% of them are tested for shmallenberg because of the unprecedented number of deformed lambs in the dec lambers, so at least I don't have to worry about that

Scanned 100 out of 212... this year I put half to the ram on the hill and half were flushed on lowland. This particular group comprised to poorest half of each group. Rams were left in for 30 days. This group has 40 old ewes marked for calling this year, mostly broken mouths.
Hill group. .. 36 ewes to have 32 lambs.
Lowland group. .. 64 ewes to have 96 lambs
Will be putting all ewes to the ram on lowland next year. .. lost about half lamb per ewe by not bringing all d ewes home to the ram.
