2013 registration problem

Spoke to a friend who is picking up a new Audi next week. Well that's what he thought!

Not only is his car an extra 1500 quid than it was when he ordered it and paid a deposit but the dealer has said the government/Shannon have not updated the registration system for the increased VRT so the earliest he will have the car is the 5th Jan and anyone else buying a car in ROI won't be picking anything up on the 2nd Jan no matter what the make.

Anyone else hear this? Seems a bit mad to risk messing anything up to do with new car purchases considering the way the sector is?

VRT changes/increases were always on the cards, but were not announced until Budget day. Surely the dealer explained this to the customer at the time of order?

Haven't heard anything about it yet but that said I'm not back until wed anyway....

    Wouldn't surprise me though.

My father is picking his up on the 3rd, dealer gave a price on the vrt increase and it was within 50 of it and as it was in the fathers favour he doesn't have to pay it. This car was looked at in early November, ordered later as it was coming into stock anyway.

He may have ordered it before budget, don't really think he's too put off by that though.

He has no car at the moment so had based work stuff etc around the 2nd Jan and assuming he'd have a car, so it's more that.

He's had Audis for years and I brought him somewhere tonight in a BMW and he said he wishes he'd looked at the 5 series now though :P

I dont think anyone who agreed deals before the budget will be affected. Surely there has to be a way of getting arounf the problem?

VRT is payable at date of registration so no, there is no way around it. The higher price is the higher price, and most customers would have been told about the increase when the deal was done.

The only way around it from a customer point of view is where the dealer had agreed up front to absorb the VRT price increase. I know there was at least one manufacturer had planned on doing that, I remember seeing some advertising to that effect. But ultimately the additional VRT has to be paid, it's just a case of who pays.

Unless the car isn't loaded up on the revenue system then I can't see an issue at all. The dealer will Reg the car, but will get undercharged the VRT if the system hasn't been updated.

His dealer price list will tell him what the VRT amount should be, so that's what they charge to the customer and just make sure to keep the difference between what has been paid by the customer and what had been paid to the revenue for when they come looking.

If there is an issue I should know fairly early ok Wednesday - got one car and one car van tlin the garage. Will be chasing dealers for Reg numbers so i get plates made up.

    Course you should.

Fo sure. I've heard Audi dealers make at least 15,000 on each one they sell.

The Car company i'm getting my car from are not passing the extra VRT charges on the cars so the customer doesnt pay.

Did he not have an arrangement with the Audi garage??? Receipt even??

If Audi had put up the price that's one thing but as it's a government charge I suppose it's just as the discretion of the dealer if they want to knock another 1500 or whatever it is, off the price of the car.

Audi were advertising in December that they would absorb any VRT increase in the budget it may be worth your friends while pulling them on this. Although he may have ordered at a time when this promotion was not running.

You werent listening very closely. Ad was pre budget and said that Audi would honour the price you agree with your Audi dealer today regardless of what happened to vrt in the budget. All dealers had the new January pricelist as per predicted increases.

Well I ordered in October and after the budget I was informed there would be an extra cost due to vrt rises.

Skoda have theirs up but VW/Audi don't for some reason.

VW Pricing I just checked on their website matches what I have, so it looks like it's updated.

Most of the vehicles I've checked on Carzone seem to be the up to date pricing http://www.carzone.ie/new-cars

Also, just checked Jag's on http://cars.irishtimes.com/new-cars/ and they matched my pricing.

Depends what date in October Nick. Audi dealers got new January pricing Oct 12th. Had you ordered before or after that? Government increase at the end of the day - tough for dealers to absorb it.
