    Hi all,

A friend of mines father passed away a couple of years ago and there has been a car sitting up in the shed ever since .

They are clearing out the shed and are wondering how they go about scrapping the car ?

The log book is in the name of the deceased father .

They have completed the probate process and have their docs to say they are in charge of the estate , if this is any help.

Any help on this or a point in the right direction would be great , haven't been able to find anything online and it needs to be moved as soon as possible.

    Thanks for looking :)

Regardless of whos name its in, theres someone who will take it away.

Could they not try sell it? What kind of car is it?

But if it was ever dumped etc surely it would come back to my friends door , if the ownership wasn't changed ? Sorry I don't drive myself , haven't a clue of how people go about this :)
Thought it would be fairly straightforward as people die all the time but can't see anything online.

It's a Volvo not sure of exact model

How long is it sitting up, what year and try find out what model and engine size and any more info.

If they just send for scrap you need to get a cert to show it was scrapped and if they sell to a new owner they can send the logbook with the new owners name filled in on it and just sign as the original owner as seller.

I understand the original owner has died but just sign his name on it.

That is a very good point.

You could try calling up a breakers yard/scrap yard and they will take it and break it up to sell for parts. Make sure its an official, well-known place though.

I had these guys take away my grandparents car a few years ago and had absolutely no hassle afterwards.

    Thank you for that link.

I think she would just be worried that if anything happened or she singed as him it would come back to her and we both presumed there would be a quick and simple method for her to sign of as the administrater of the estate and sell or scrap the car , but it looks like she would have to contact reg authority send off her details and get it to her name to then scrap or sell which is a lot of hassle to just clear the space. And that's if that's even the process .

Not wanting to sound like a pariah of sorts but what type of car is it, what age is it and what sort of general condition is it in? It might actually be of some use/value to someone on here without having to go in the scrapyard.

She has all the details of car , I don't have them here. It's a 98 volvo 1.8 is all I can think of off hand.

It's sitting up since before her father passed away so at least 2yrs+ max 3

I see where your coming from but if she uses a well known company theres only a very slim chance something like that will happen.

When I had my grandparents car taken away it was in my grandfathers name and I explained that the car has been there for years etc and they took it absolutely no problem.

If you get a breakers yard to take it away it will probably be broken up into 100 pieces the same day.

As stated you would have no problem signing on behalf of deceased.e.g He signed already.

Nobody needs to know and it is not checked up unless the car was sold stolen or something like that.

If you were keeping the car then changing into widows name would be okay but honestly not necessary.

You should look up all info on the car and see if it's worth anything because it may actually be a good Volvo and worth putting back on the road.

Let me know as I do a bit with car's myself

Bring the car to an authorised ELV facility and get a cert of destruction.
