Brilliant Hoover I have one that's a great price

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

That's incredibly cheap! It's a bit of an entry model with only 1600W, but still a bargain :)

Forget about the ongoing Dyson hype. If you want the best vacuum cleaners there are, buy a Miele

Went from a dyson to a Miele ( the one above ) and couldn't recommend it highly enough. Absolute BARGAIN at that price!!!

+1 for a Miele at the Powercity price, we have one like this and it is a great machine.

One tip for 're-using' the (not-so-cheap) bags in a Miele - before first use, use a scissors to remove the internal 'strands' within the bag - if you do this, it will be possible to empty the contents into your dustbin at least once and allow you to use the bag again (otherwise, the strands prevent emptying).

Got a bargain Miele S5280 up North in Jan 2008 for €99 when Sterling was 1:1 with the Euro.

Had 2 Dysons before that and were a load of rubbish. Got the entry Dyson at first and bought a dearer one the next time thinking it would be better. The Miele is still going strong and hasn't lost any suction. Good bargain this

Bagless is the biggest con in hoovering.

maybe if it's a dodgy old Hoover from the 80's, but miele make the most reliable, powerful vacuums (and other appliances) you'll find anywhere.

buy one and youcan more or less guarantee it will be the last vacuum you'll ever buy. :)

I wouldn't agree that Meile are bullet proof and last forever. We had one and the motor blew in it. Maybe we were just unlucky. It was under warranty so it was ok, but they did try to get out of fixing it.

I would say changing the bags and filter is very important to the life span of any vc.

Agreed... ours has developed several minor faults since buying it circa 4 years ago.

One of the buttons that is pressed to extended the main 'tube' thingy broke off so now it's fixed in full position, the small brush attachment broke in two at the point where it turns and there's another piece of plastic that slides back and forth to open/close an section to let in air that fell off.

And believe me... this is a lightly used hoover, and we always try our best to take care of things.

A good hoover though.. bags can be expensive, but can be sourced cheaper on eBay.

Leaning towards the more powerful model for 179 - have a Cat & Dog one that needs replacing - reckon going from 2200 to 1600 W would be a bit disappointing

Eh? If it was the the other way around, and they introduced vacuum cleaners that need bags, that would be a con. Not sure how ditching the requirement for consumables is a con...

From using both types I'd say it's say it's the "constant suction no matter how full it is" rubbish the bagless crowd come out with.

Good price for that also I see. I was concerned that 1600w may have been a wee bit underpowered, but having read the comments & reviews it appears to be a powerful little bugger. If I had pets though, I may well be inclined to go for a model with more oomph.

Think you're mixing your models there - reckon previous posters were taking about the 2200 W model in his last sentence

    You did very well!

I've the S5280 too (2200W). Bought it about 5 or 6 years ago for about €160 (special offer at the time and bargained another tenner off) in Power City. That was by far the cheapest in the country at the time

Great vacuum cleaner. If / when it breaks I will be buying another Miele. Save yourself many hours hoovering compared with cheaper / fancier ones :)

Yeah, got it in Currys in the week between Christmas and New Year. Rang them up the following day, as my mam wanted one, and they were sold out

Once you go Miele you never go back. Dyson are a joke by comparison.

Thanks so much for that tip. I bought a Miele last year and I was really surprised with all those strands. I always empty the bag and reuse it as many times as possible, as the bags are way too expensive to just throw away. I couldn't understand what the purpose of those strands were, now I know. Anyway thanks so much

If you suffer from allergies and asthma, you should not reuse dustbags rather change them more frequently. This is because the tiny particles that you react to are just sent back out thru the bag. Also with a set of new bags there should be one filter that goes at entrance to motor and it is probably important for the motor to keep that changed frequently also.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭paddyp

You can get decent quality spurious bags for about 1.50 each in packs of 10 on ebay. Genuine ones are just over €2 including filters on amazon. The main issue with reusing bags is that the air passing through the bag is what cools the motor, if the bag is excessively constricted the motor can overheat.

Are Miele really worth the money? im in the market for a new vacuum cleaner, i have a golden Retriever that sheds a lot, but i have all wood and tiled floors, so i dint think i need the special Dog and Cat models, i think they are more focussed on hair removal from carpets, i stand to be corrected there.

On that basis, i think a standard vacuum with a HEPA filter should suffice and considering that theres a lot of dog hair, im afraid the bags will fill up really fast, so my question is if there is value in paying €200 for a Miele vs a Vax or similar HEPA based vacuum that would be half the price or less.....and that would be bagless, albeit i understand the pros and cons of the bag vs bagless......?

    OPinions apprecaited.

I would vote yes! Best vacuum I've ever owned (I've owned 6 or so). I have a similar model to this which can easily switch from carpet to wood/tile by stepping on a switch on the vacuum head. We have a lot of tile downstairs and we often use it rather than sweep. It also has a really simply feature of sliding open a hole to reduce suction. I slide it open a bit and vacuum the pet beds, couches, or anywhere else they've been shedding. I think the special pet models probably have revolving brushes in the vacuum head. In my experience, this isn't necessary and are just one more thing to go wrong. The durability and simplicity is the strong point of this vacuum. The suction is so strong it lifts up the carpet and it's not even on full power. We don't have allergies but I have to imagine this really gets a lot of dust and dander down deep.

Arnotts are carrying the HEPA-filtered S768 for €149 with free delivery, which may prove a good compromise.

I ended up going with the S8310 and am hugely impressed by its power and ease of use (I must be getting old if a vacuum cleaner excites me to this extent). The cable extends to 36 feet and the build quality would leave me confident that the effectiveness & durability the brand are renowned for will be borne out.

Declan on the Currys forum kindly matched the Powercity price + 10% of the difference FWIW.

I see DID Electrical are selling a Miele S5211 for €160 in their weekly deals:
    http://www.did.ie/miele-vacuum-cleaner-S5211

Has anybody any experience of this particular model? And is this a good price? (they are claiming it is marked down from €240)

I was very happy with my Miele. But with allergy issues in the house I was persuaded to change to a Nilfisk that had a special extra HEPA filter for trapping microscopic particles. This filter was pricey to renew on an annual basis and difficult to source has since been removed. I do not notice any difference just keep up with frequent vacuuming etc. Nilfisk is also a very powerful machine and big dustbag. I gave away my Miele as did not need two machines.

I think I would go back to the Miele now if I could choose. I liked the retractable cord facility, the onboard tools and the bag was easier to change. Overall it was a neater machine to use. I had great use out of my old Miele and was able in time to replace the brush head when it wore out and the hose that was damaged. I must have run up many miles in it but the motor was still sound when I gave it away.

I picked up the HEPA-filtered S768, my wife loves it cause I actually started to do some of the hoovering! It's way more powerful than the Dyson we had and it's crazy quite for how powerful it is... It's nice n neat n one thing I like is that it seems to be fairly handy to get replacements for most parts..
