So after a few years out I wanna get back into djing (with the laptop).

So what are the kids using these days? Back in my day I was using Ableton. Is that still the most popular software?

    Cheers.

Traktor, serato and virtual dj are all very popular and there are also options like mixx. Most offer free trials so download and see what you like.

If you buy a controller many come with limited edition copies of one of the programmes above which you can upgrade at a reduced cost, up to 60% off the normal price.

    Cheers.

Probably a stupid question, but do these programs require a laptop with 2 soundcards??

No they don't. You can also get controllers with a built in audio interface if that makes life easier.

Definitely go this route. External sounds cards are just a mess and another thing to carry. Quality is generally better for externals but you have that added hassle of cabling etc. Saying that I used a LaunchPad and a Traktor Audio 2 sound card, I just can't find a fully fledged controller I like.

I got myself a Pioneer DJ Wego there the other day, 300 new, its like a mini 2 decks and a mixer, I got it due to space constraints in my house, great piece of kit, I actually used it on my radio show last night and I'm fairly blown away at the quality for such a small dinky machine.....

There was one for 450 but not much extra to justify spending the extra 150....

I use it with Traktor but it comes with virtual DJ or one of them programs....

You can still use ableton in conjunction with serato or traktor, or just on it's own.

I use serato with 1210s and dicers for loop control and software navigation and it's perfect for my needs.

I also have one of these which I carry to gigs as backup. They can be got used for about 100 euro if your lucky and has a built in audio interface, op I'd highly recommend one if you are looking for a controller. Vdj works well with it out of the box, not sure about the others. It's very reliable and great value used, always a few knocking around adverts and dd.

Out of interest, did anyone try/buy the controller they were selling in Lidl recently for around €55?

    What software does it control?

a bit of searching around and can only see it working with whatever the app it comes with.
    But, http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/usb-dj-controller-49-99-lidl-1417136
seems more of a toy really. I'd wondered if it might be one of those typical Lidl products that are slim on features but strong enough to withstand a belt of a sledge, doesn't seem so in this case.

Thought it said on the box that it works with other djing programmes but I've no proof all the same!

I'd never use a controller bought in Lidl for that price in a gig. Might be good for practising to see if you like the controller/software route, then upgrade. But you're asking for trouble and it's ridiculously unprofessional to show up with bog standard gear like that.

The Hercules RMX is a good, low cost controller to get started with. I had one before I upgraded to the S4 (which is a dream).

Its a knockoff of the Numark IDJ live .. and thats a decent price for a knockabout.

Assuming its the same, it'll work as a regular midi controller and can control Djay and Vjay for Iphone/ipad as well.

You still need a 4ch soundcard to cue with.

Got rated at the time as THE best jogwheels gizmo had ever used.
