    9E for Tooway on Ka-Sat
    33W I think for Avanti on Hylas1

It's not Broadband, only Internet with a horrible Cap system.

It can be be better or worse than Mobile, which isn't Broadband either. 1Mbps DSL is better than either.

Latency is the biggest killer here for anything involving TCP packets i'm afraid

Thanks for info Watty, Is the Tooway internet service on Hotbird 13E KA band used in ireland or mostly UK and europe.

The 13E HB6 service (Ka Band) was only a 4 spot trial of the 82 Spot Ka-Sat service. It was used here. But the capacity is poor. You really don't want to be on it!

Does anyone think the upcoming 4G services will be a worth while solution for rural internet access?

No, it won't offer anything new. It's mobile, it should be used for mobility, not as a real broadband substitute

What's more it will be more expensive than 3G Data which is massively cross subsidized by voice (which is over charged). Also as customers are added it will slow till only 20% to 80% faster than 3G.
Coverage will be very poor to non-existent for years outside of Urban areas due to lack of Comreg licence conditions.

So in a way it will be pretty useless so for people to go out to the sales and splash out wads of cash on new IPads hoping for a real broadband service and experience.

Mmmm make sure you have Real Broadband first, also Apple's overpriced "walled garden" appliances are losing the reality distortion field,
Apple 15% and only 1% growth, virtually no choice of models.
Android 75% growth and cheaper for more features, with a very wide variety models to suit different pockets and features/desires.

Chicken and egg though. Eircom broadband is only 1 mbps in many parts of Ireland so are we saying in fact there is no proper broadband and by proper I mean enough to drive RTE player YouTube etc in rural Ireland?

Satellite BB is good if you want to hide your location in the sense that you could be anywhere in the footprint

it's also good if you have no other possible means of internet access

Meanwhile in Israel http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/12/27/israel_plots_nbn/ they plan to rollout symmetrical gigabit to 2/3rds of the country
