Turning off Touchpad on Asus

    Hi,
The touchpad on my Asus laptop is driving me mad. I mostly use a wireless mouse and would like to turn off the touchpad. The issue is that when I type I my big thumbs keep moving the cursor around in random ways that are really annoying. I've installed a pretty useless program call TouchPad Pal that claims it will turn off the touchpad when typing. It sort of works but not nearly 100%.
Any way to turn off the touchpad altogether?
    Thanks.

Have a look at the F keys there should be one to disable the touchpad ie.hold down Fn and F3 or 4.

Is there a button beside the touch to lock it? Most laptops I've come across have a lock button there. If not try one of the function keys, Fn + one of the Fn keys

Model A54C. No button on the touchpad that I can see. The F9 key has what looks like the touchpad with a line through it but no combination of keys seem to have any affect.

That F9 key should lock it, check is there the Fn key on the bottom row, its normally beside the ctrl button. If you press and hold that then hit F9 it should lock/unlock.

If it doesn't work it might be possible that the Fn functions are disabled. Try doing Fn + one of the other F keys (F1-F0).
If they work then I'm not sure what the problem is, if they don't then you need to enable the Fn functionality

If you don't manage to find the key to toggle the touchpad you could always disable it in device manager.

All the other Fn keys work, dim display, volume, etc.
Tips on the device manager route? What would happen when I re-boot would it still be disabled?

Odd, that button must be just faulty then i guess. I don't think you can do it in device manager. Do this:

For xp: control panel -> mouse -> device settings tab on top -> select the touchpad in the list and then click disable button

I'm assuming it's probably similar if your using windows 7/8

It should stay disabled this way even when re-booting so you'll be using your mouse permanently instead
