    So,

Had this problem I posted about a few days ago on my Volvo V50 2.0D
Noise coming from the engine bay on the left hand side and a burning smell coming from around the alternator.

Did a bit of research and seemed to point to the alternator being the cause, with basically anyone getting the same problem eventually getting a "Power system failure service urgent" message.

Got the train to work for 2 weeks.
Didn't drive the car over christmas, got all the christmas shopping by bike.
Went and got a refurb alternator.

Removed engine cover again, this time notices one of the rubber dowels holding the engine cover on had fallen on the engine block and was slightly melted.

Reattached dowel and replaced cover, started car and gave it a rev.

Burning smells and whining noise now gone away ...

    FFFFUUUUUUUUUU :D:D:D:D

never assume anything, but glad to hear it wasn't as serious as you had thought, and surley you'd get a refund on the alternator?

ah yeh I'd say that part will be fine, but its the train tickets, hotel and 3 hours of travel that was the expensive bit :pac::pac:

At least you've a nice fresh alternator to show for it.

depends. if it came from main dealer, unlikely. if it came from motor factors and was ordered in especially, unlikely also, due to the fact it could be hard to sell again.

You could always try exchange it for some consumable parts/store credit?

Nah it came from a Alternator and Starter Motor specialist, they basically have everything under the sun in stock.

    Link

I'm thinking I might replace it anyway as the Alternator is definitely making a rattly noise.
