I know this is a bit off rugby topic, but hopefully someone here could help. I'd really like to start a new sport in the New Year and everyone says that tag rugby is great fun. Does anyone know of any good tag rugby teams in the Dublin area?

    Cheers,

    Sarah

If you register here I believe you can find teams in your area. You should also check your local club and see if they have a tag team. You'll probably get more response in the Rugby forum so I'll move your post there.

Hey Sarah, thank link AK gave you was to IRTA Tag rugby. They run leagues which last about 8 weeks, so usually you have to come in at the start of a new League. The current league "season" will end in late January, so if you want to start you're looking at February.

When that happens go to that website click "sign up as an individual" and you'll be on a team of individuals. I started around April last year on an individuals team with two mates and it was good fun. As a new years commitment it works because the tag really gets you moving and gives you a team of people to motivate you.

I can't recommend it highly enough.

If you're looking to get fit and have fun there is also Touch Rugby. Check out the following sites for more information:

    Sold on this pic.

I'm curious about touch, I'm about to retire from rugby and I enjoy playing tag. At training touch is usually a much tighter game with scores only coming from decent support runs and dummies. How does it play out in a mixed format?
I'm definitely in favour of dives for the try line, far safer and natural. I've done damage to my knees before in tag trying to stop and get the ball down.

Where abouts in Dublin are you? If you're Northside, Unidare RFC have recently set up a Ladies Tag team, based in Dublin 9/11

    Hi Beaner

Touch is much faster than tag. The full version is very different to what most teams play in training. You're right that most scores come from good play as it's near impossible to miss a tackle like it is in Tag. Touch is played single sex and mixed and also has different age groups. My advice is give it a try.

    Hey everyone,

Thanks a million for all the helpful information. I had not even considered touch rugby, but looks very promising! Thanks for all the help.

How fit do you typically have to be to play in the IRTA leagues?

Hi awec, you don't have to be super fit at all. The times per game vary at different venues but it's generally only around 15 mins per half, and some would play up to 20 mins per half.

That said, it is definitely a good run out and if you haven't done anything in a while, the cheeks could be puffing hard 5 mins into a game :o

You don't find yourself standing still for a lot of the game like you might if you are a winger in a game of Union on a miserable night!

But subs are usually roll on roll off so you can take a breather (if you have subs).

Definitely a great way to get out and start doing something and if you are not the fittest, you certainly won't be the only one struggling 5 / 10 mins into a game!

Sounds like fun, but I'd be bust after 5 minutes. After 10 minutes I'd probably throw up. :D

Will keep it in mind though, sounds like it'd be a good laugh if nothing else! Will keep my eye out for teams too, in the south Dublin area. :)
