French Scrum machine

Just randomly found this video on youtube about a new method of scrummaging practice being used by the French. It's a machine that alters pressure points and monitors each player's directional changes and stuff like that. I have absolutely no experience of scrummaging so i'd be interested to know what any boards props think. It seems very technical compared to the average one where you chuck a few heavy lads on the other side.

The U20's French pack did look very good in the scrum during the summer.

they have used this machine for a few seasons now and it really worked good especially in the 2010 tournament. Nowadays however I think the game requires to dose the efforts in the scrum to gain some mobility on the pitch.

How many times did we notice that dominating the scrum wasn't giving you the points you were looking for with it .... it certainly gives you a good plateform but burning too much fuel in it is a danger.

This machine is certainly a good tool but the most important is what you want to achieve with it.

Its main advantage is being able to gauge the impact/force/push of each individual player. Hence gaining a "balance" vs the opposition
It allows the staff to increase/decrease the "opposition" scrum, something impossible in real life training. However it can't replicate the various "trickery" that are part & parcel of frontrow life.

They also have machines for hookers which in theory increase their accuracy without wearing out their teammates. Swarfega is a big fan.

I remember seeing a video (at around the same time as Serge Betsen was new-ish on the block) about how the French were using a NFL scrimmaging machine for their scrum training, and then they went on to dominate the scrum in that year's 6N (or possibly 5N).

    Innovators, the French.
