After seeing a mans full name and address published online after he had been charged with a road traffic offence on Christmas Eve, I wonder what's the logic behind this?

Why is a persons name and full address published, especially when they have been remanded in custody ( leaving their family at that address). ?

    It seems unnecessary

There could be many people with the same name in a county, by giving full name and address it is clearly stating who the person is. Courts are by and large administered in public.

It sells newspapers and satisfies the need for gossip.

It's so the journalists can pad out space.

Fills space, gossip, sells papers also ensures they dont defame someone by getting two Patrick Murphys in Ballynowhere mixed up.

Frankly if you dont want to be named dont do the crime.

He, or she, was only charged with the crime, though, right?

Being charged does not mean guilt. 2 totally different scenarios.

And if it's a very slow day the journos might even tell us which school the accused attended..

I have noticed lately a lack of court reports for the local district courts. They tend only to be printed to fill space rather than as a news item.
