if you have no experience at all then couch to 5k is a good plan to start off on,

as for gear, you don't have to spend much...Lidl Aldi's running gear is used by an awful lot of people on this forum (incl myself)

I took up running last janurary, with very poor fitness, i was struggling to run any sort of distance at all.

I now run 12k or so once a week and 5k a few times a week and times are improving all the time.

The best advice i can give its

    1. Dont spend alot of money on gear at the start, if you have decent runners see if you can make do for a month or two, to test the waters as such as some people will find their knees etc cant take the toil of road running etc.

    2. What i did find it wise to spend some money on is some running tshirts that will wick the sweat away and be breathable, Nike , Addidas etc etc all produce these under labels like clima-cool etc.

    3. Dont push too hard at the start, if you go out tommorow and start trying to run huge distances and pushing yourself to the limit you will end up sore and fed up and possibly injured very quickly. Take it easy at first set yourself on a good starter programme like couch to 5k etc.

    4. Warm ups , i see some people do and some dont, i do warm up slightly by stretching calf muscles and tighs but i see others dont , do what you feel is best for your body.

    5. Food.... it depends on what your diet is like now if your 90kg chances are your not overweight or if you are its only slight. Pesonally i try not to eat white breads or potatoes too much.... i prefer wholegrains and try not to consume fizzy drinks or sweets.

I'd agree with all the other replies so far.
I just started running in August with the Couch to 5k. Now I run about 5k three times a week & hope to work towards 10k in the new year. I started with one pair of tracksuit bottoms & the €10 Dunnes runners I'd had for years. I would suggest- as Outkast_IRE has- that you get a wicked top, a polo shirt had me too hot all the time. I still need to get more tracksuit bottoms but I've just gotten decent runners, I wanted to wait until I'd finished c25k before spending a fortune!
As for your final questions the NHS podcast for c25k covered most of that for me- telling me to stretch, not go too fast, to concentrate on breaths, to eat a banana when I finished a run :) I did the common sense things like stop eating so many sweets & 6 slices of white bread every day (as I was) & the 'Nutitrion 101' sticky at the top of the Nutrition & Diet forum is great.
Good luck, enjoy & *dont run too fast or too far at the start!*

Can I make a suggestion that you try and get together with others. I run once a week with a Meet and Train group, and then run with others/on my own 3 other times a week.

If you commit to running with a group it does help keep the motivation strong.

Relax, dont rush it and enjoy it! :)
