turbo/boost problem..

I have a 2002 Audi A4 advant, was out last night, drove to the town perfect, on the way home it couldnt pull up hill in third with 4 people in the car??
No horrible noises at any point, starting fine, when i took it out this morning there is some black smoke when under load and when cruising along it feels 'jerky', like it doesnt want to sit at a constant rpm, and is down on power.
A quick google is pointing to turbo failure or MAF failure, but then there is talk of maybe a boost pipe leaking, or sticking actuators also.

Anybody had any experience with symptoms as I have described?? My only previous experience of a turbo going was plumes of smoke from the car.

    TIA

I've got a 2002 Passat that showed similar problems to yours recently. Jerky at low rpm for weeks. Finally one morning I started it and there was no power whatsoever. Turned out to be pipes feeding the turbo, they were rotten and eventually just gave up and the turbo wasn't able to function.

That's the best description I can give, I'm not a hugely mechanical person. Hope it helps.

My Dad had a problem like that a few years ago with an Audi. Turned out to be a hole in an air hose going to the engine. Couldn't hold revs and couldn't pull up a hill

Could be anything, plug it into VAGCOM and you should see an error code.

Might be the MAF but not point in buying bits if your not sure.

    What engine is in it?

Its a 1.9tdi 130bhp. Yea I will get it plugged in, but its just that the local garage not open until the new year, just more curious to see what might be causing the problem! When I get a chance tomorrow I will get a good look around for any damaged or leaking pipes

The issue was similar on my Octavia, same engine.

Would it 1800rpmish and then kind of bounce around there in the rev range.

If you accelerated more slowly it could get above that.
