I have a D80 and wondered whether you folks would regard
the D7000 as a good step up from the D80 in terms of performance
    picture quality etc.
I'm not all that interested in the Video as I understand that will not be
very good either way and I don't really need dual SD slots so those things aside would you trade up to a D7000 from a D80 and consider it a good move up spec-wise?
In this price bracket are there any other models I should be considering? The d600 is out of my range.

i would think it to be a good upgrade. before i switched to canon, when i wanted to upgrade my D80, i was looking at the D7000. it had the spec i was looking for. there will probably be an upgrade to the D7000 soon, so maybe hang on a while for that to come out?

May I ask where to keep an eye out for any upgrade to the d7000?

I am seriously thinking of getting one of these too . In all of the online reviews it compares very well against canon which are 400 or so dearer . The double slot is deemed very useful by all of the reviewers.
For the money, it seems a good buy. Hoping to get one in my hands soon to see if it feels good.

i think there's a nikon rumours site.. if you do a search on google for something like that, it'll bring you to a site that keeps track of what may come out in the future. the D7000 has been out a little while, they usually only have a few years before they get replaced.

I spent a lot of time trying to decide wether to upgrade from the D80 to the D7000, I wasn't sure if i was doing enough photography to justify the expense.
I had a once in a life time trip to America in August so i decided to splash out.
In the 6 months since i got the camera i have taken more photos than i had in the previous 2 years.
Coming from the D80 i found the D7000 very intuitive and there wasn't a lot to learn in terms of camera functions. It has certainly helped me improve my photography and given me more options and a lot more enthusiasm.
The price of the D7000 has come down a lot since release and while there may be an upgrade around the corner i think i will hang on to it for a few years.

Well , I took the plunge today, got the Nikon d7000 and the kit lens 18-105. Looking forward to playing with it this evening and getting going again. The last pic I took on an SLR was circa 1990 on a Canon AE1, which I still have somewhere in the wardrobe !

Just curious as to whether you traded in your d80 in the US or did you keep it and did you buy the d7000 in B&H, NY ?

I actually bought mine on Amazon and flogged the D80 on ebay, you should easily get over 200 the D80 body.
I visited the B&H shop when I was in New York, it is unbeliveablly big, one whole block, a sweetshop for photographers
