I've had two Toshiba's and they're not great TBH. Ended up throwing both out. I've had one Lenovo and it was only OK. At the minute I have a Samsung RV511 and have had NO trouble with it in the year I've had it so far.

    Review HERE and HERE

IIRC it was in Harvey Norman, not sure if they still do Samsung though. I think I paid around €549 (ish) for it. I'm sure it's been updated though. PC World do a good selection of Samsung laptops for decent enough money though. Here ya go: LINKY (just "filter by brand" and click Samsung and it'll reduce it from 11 to 2 pages for ya.)

Hi looking a this HP below. Can someone advise if HP is a solid buy and why this particular model might be so heavily discounted?

    http://www.currys.ie/Product/HP-Pavilion-g62216sa-Laptop-White/316201/148

Was also looking at an asus c54x in Harvey Norman's (sorry no link). It has an i3 processor, windows 7, 4GB RAM and 500 GB memory for €399.

Any view on Asus brand? Which would be better for internet browsing, office work?

Finally, and apologies for all questions .. am not very knowlegable in this area, is it worth going for Windows 8 or would windows 7 be adequate for light user?

    Thanks for all advice

I'm currently browsing for a new laptop myself and I've been told to stay away from Asus. It was last year leading up to Christmas, I was in a PC World store demonstrating HP laptops and HP g version did sell really well but it's a basic laptop. It'll do the job, I like the offer PC World have on them at the moment but I have my heart set on a Lenovo Z580 laptop (genuinely don't know why). As for Windows 8, I haven't heard one positive review about it. Now to be fair, once it takes getting used to it's handy but if there's a laptop with Windows 7 get that, that's one of the main reasons why I've waited weeks to get a new laptop because I don't want Windows 8 on it

Would see Asus as a pretty good make myself, in general from any of the main manufacturers their budget lines tend to be the source of the vast majority of problems, be it HP, Lennovo,Asus,Acer etc. Pretty well any 300-400 laptop is going to have a pretty flimsy build and Asus are no exception.

That said the z580 is a very nice choice mind, but it would be silly to completely rule out something like the Asus K55 models in the same price range IMO.

There pretty much the same thing both very solid mid range laptops imo, no harm having a backup model if shopping for a good deal. ;)

I'm been looking at these and the Lenovo seem to have the best build quality. What I can't decide on is which has the best screen. As Windows 8 kinda disguises how good/bad a screen is, and they are usually locked up in store so you can't play with them, or put them side by side. I'd really prefer a 17" but very few on disaplay in store to judge the screens.

Ended up going for this from Powercity!!:)

It's pretty good for the price (400).

Currently upgrading to W8 for €15.

What do you guys think of the laptop?

Did I make a humongous mistake!! :o (ignore the colour...it's not that bad actually...hubby quite happy with it!!)

Not a massive bargain, but it is a decent enough price all the same. Its not the most powerful processor in the world but it is just fine for your needs, browsing/emails etc. I find even the cheaper Samsung's have a decent enough build quality so all in all I'd say you haven't done too badly.

It's broadly in line with online prices for fairly similar laptops (These have a marginally better processor but smaller HDD)

Sorry been off the boards for a few days as picked up a hell of a flu which litterally floored me. Ended up taking the Asus model as didn't have the energy to go researching any more and need to pick up something quickly. I was talking to guy in Curry's who told me that the €439 HP had an AMD processor which wouldnt be as good as the i-core processor in the €499 model. Not sure if the AMD is much better/worse than the i3 in the Asus but in any case I'm stuck with it now for a while!
