Biomathematics

Hey guys, I'm not sure which forum this would be better suited to so I decided to post it here.

I'm currently studying Mathematical Science (1st year) in NUIG and I'm looking into Biomathematics as a career? Could anyone enlighten me on the variety of jobs available to a biomathematician? I'd be most interested in neuromathematics or something relating to the human body/medical background. In my final year we get offered a list of modules and some of them are biology-related (as biology related as modules in a mathematical science course gets). I plan on doing as many of these as possible as I am and have always been interested in both biology and mathematics. Some of these modules include "Neural Networking (computer science aspect of my course)", "Bioinformatics/biostatistics" (which is subdivided into "molecular evolution" and "genetics" headings) and also there used to be a heading "Bayesian Cell plotting" or something like that (There hasn't been a final year group yet as the course is relatively new).

Does anyone have any past experience in any of these areas or are there any resources in which I can use to look into more depth of these topics (books, websites etc?- not too difficult or needing a very high knowledge of a certain subject if possible :P )

Have any of you ever met a biomathematician or do any of you know the main roles they play/salary/employment opportunities? The salary/employment opportunities isn't too much of an issue unless it is paid terribly :P

    Thanks :pac:

Have a read up on systems biology which involves biomathematicians. Would you consider doing a PhD? I'm in the academic arena and there's lots of systems biology research going on (well funded too) but many have PhD's. Not sure about the private sector. Salary wise as a Postdoc you'd be starting on low to mid 30's in Ireland.

    Thanks for the reply!
Oh 100% I am doing a PhD. There is no doubt in my mind that I amn't going to. That's why I'm starting to research now. I'd preferably go overseas (To one of Oxbridge or possibly one of the major colleges in the US) but if I have to I'd stay in Ireland.
