I'm looking for advice on how to get into an accounts assistant role. I am currently in my second year of the Accounting Technician Course. The majority of my experience is in administration/secretarial roles. I did do a jobbridge internship in accounts but just left one day because i couldnt hack it anymore it was a complete farce of an internship where I was left for weeks with nothing to do despite asking for work and even asking to move departments so it was on pretty bad terms and I feel I can't use this company as a reference. So just looking for advice on how to get into accounts

I used to be a financial controller. I entered the profession with no accounts/accounting experience or qualifications (although I did do exams while in the job).

I can see there are loads of jobs out there (http://www.dole.ie/main/index/2/advanced/0/0/date/all/0/0/20/accounts/0/0/0/0/0/0) but they all seem to require experience.

So how do you get experience?

I'm guessing you don't want to do another internship, so do you know anyone who owns a business? Would they let you come in once or twice a week for a little bit of on the job experience?

Accounts assistant is mostly an admin role - processing cheques, debiting/crediting the correct account, credit control, perhaps paying wages, and a few other bits and pieces like paying revenue its tax.

I would imagine lots of accounts jobs at the moment have a big focus on credit control, so could you offer to do this for your current employer or a friend/family member's business?

You already know the accounts stuff (it's simple anyway) so you won't struggle with that, but I reckon if you could prove you are good at credit control you could really increase you chance of finding a job.

Thanks for your reply Mr Loverman I dont want to do another internship I spent 6 months on that one so I dont think Im allowed to do a second one anyway also I have a young child which I put into creche to do it and took a large financial hit because I had (emptily) been promised a job at the end of the internship.
As for going in one or two days a week Im currently a full time student so would not have much time off during weekdays.
My main issue is as you said they all require experience but I cant get in anywhere to gain the experience!
