Dont think there is a scheduled flight from Cork to Shannon I'm afraid. Shannon must also be one of the worst towns in Ireland, little in it apart from the industrial estates.

You could however fly from Cork to Dublin? Go to a museum in Dublin city?

Why would there be scheduled flights between Cor and Shannon?
They're only like 70 miles apart plus I would hazard zero demand.

Fly up to Dublin early. Take the free bus to the long term car park and watch the aircraft coming in (more info here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055357904) - should be interesting departures (a330's, 757's, 767's etc) If it's a Saturday you might see an AF 747F, but more likely a 777f.

You can also get some food in T1 before you leave where you can see the ramp.

Alternatively, you could fly to manchester and visit http://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/manweb.nsf/Content/runwayvisitorpark

EI fly out at 7.45am and return at 9.25pm on a saturday.

If you want to go to the museum (the airventure one, I presume), then just drive there, via Google maps or the like and go to the Flying Boat Museum in Foynes as well. You can finish your day by going to Shannon Airport for a nosebag and a view of the jets landing. If you want to go on a flight, then just do a day return to London or something like that. If you want to get him up in a small aircraft, go up to the flying schools/clubs at the side of Cork Airport and get a voucher for a short local flight.

Don't think so, great little town, might not be your ideal but I have been living here for over two years and find it great. What experience do you have of Shannon?

    It's a dump that's built around a pub and a supermacs

    That's what I thought

I thought domestic were all gone now due to buses and motorways. I remember Ryanair used to fly ORK-DUB but ended the route about a year ago. But come to think of it, wasn't the Cork crash last year a flight from Belfast City?

If you really want to fly to Shannon, you're looking at a flight from Cork to an airport in England and then back to Shannon but that'd be crazy

OP it would probably be easier if you did a day trip to UK as already mentioned- if he is as mad into aircraft as you say he might appreciate a trip to Manchester or Heathrow a bit more than a trip to an aul museum in Shannon ;) You could easily do a day trip to heathrow/manchester from Cork.

Fly to Manchester, go to the Viewing Park.

There are no domestic services from Cork and anyway, what's on offer at Manchester is superior to what's available at any airport here.

Dunno what day(s) the A380 comes to Manchester but you could try work around that too.

A small few left. Irish Rail also targeted the airlines and overall travel demand is down.

    Dublin-Kerry
    Dublin-Donegal
    Inveran-Aran Islands
    Falcaragh-Tory Island (seasonal, helicopter)

Worked there for a while. All it is is the town centre that has little to nothing in it. Apart from that there is no character, no old buildings, grid layout coupled with the fact that a lot of the "trouble makers" from the north were rehoused there during the troubles has led the town to being not a nice place to live.

Granted there are lots of nice people there but the concensus was that most people I worked with commuted from Limerick and Ennis rather than live in Shannon!

I would recommend this, great day out. Even though it was pissing rain.

I think its daily around 1pm, it's so quiet. Virgin 744 was much more impressive! :P

    Hi Stovepipe
Thanks for that, we will get the Christmas over and probablt half term will see us making our way to Shannon.
Our lad is coming up to twelve in four months and until just recently had no interest in aviation, in the mornings we would watch aircraft flying over, whilst waiting for the school bus, I guess it is quite usual to comment as to where they have come from and the final destination.
We have just found flight tracker and to be honest it is great fun, then suddenly it has blossomed out into a great interest, which includes recording all Aircrash investigations.
The simulator i guess is quite simple compared to the one at Shannon but at least we can take off and land, well he can dad can't.
So thanks will keep you posted as to our thoughts of the museum, and thanks to everyone else.
    Happy New Year, Foxy
