HELP - stranded

So the old man has a 2011 diesel octavia. On Christmas morning he drove the car about 50 yards to drop off presents and then 50 yards back, no problems. When he got out of car to lock it the central locking didn't work. He got back into car to start it, everything was dead, ignition, interior lights even the hazards. The car was dead as a dodo. Spent an hour messing around with it but could find nothing wrong

Then this morning when he opens the door the interior light comes on, the door open sign on dash is on and the red light at bottom of door is on. In for the key, turns the ignition, everything lights up for a second and then blank, everything dead again

Anybody any ideas? I assumed it was immobiliser but then when dash was working this morning i thought maybe not?

He is stranded now for god knows how long, will garages be open on 27th?

Any suggestions on how to get him going again would be gratefully received

    check your battery connections first

So when you turn the key now you get nothing at all (lights etc)? Loose connection on the battery perhaps? Check both terminals are making good connection, it happened to me before and that's all it was.

You've probably already checked this but I've had similar issues with one of my cars and it turned out to be a dodgy connection on the battery lugs.

Yes car is completely dead now again

But first thing this morning door light was on and ignition came on but nothing happened as soon as key turned

Tried the battery connections and they seemed fine but wil try again

Loose connection, bad alternator, bad battery. Have you tried to jump start it?

Haven't tried to jump it as it started perfect and then dead 50 yards down the road so I assumed battery itself wasn't problem.

Car only 18 months with feck all miles on it so battery should be ok

I'd be more likely to blame a battery on a low miler than a high one. Is the 50 yard trip a common thing? You use a lot of battery power getting a car going and 50 yards is nowhere near enough driving to recharge it.

No the 50 yards would never be done, was raining and needed to drop off presents

Typically the car is doing 10 miles journeys

Loads of 10 mile journeys aren't doing the battery any good, especially in a diesel, the 50 yards just killed it.

The fact that it was completely dead yesterday and had enough juice for interior lights points to the battery. Give it a jump and take it for a long drive, or else stick a charger on it.

Well it definitely sounds like it could be a dead battery. Since that's the simplest thing check it first.

Same here. Hairline crack on one of the connectors. Missed a couple of times checking it.

Did the Octavias have the same problem as the passats where there was water in the passenger footwell and it coroded the wires underneath?

Well it turns out it was the bloody battery cable. I tried it quickly yesterday and it seemed fine but I gave it a proper inspection today and it was loose, not very loose so when u touched it seemed fine but it took 4 or 5 turns to tighten it

    Started straight away then

Thanks for the help guys, I wouldn't have gone back to the battery only you were all saying battery
