December 21st - shortest day of the year. After that date, sunset immediately starts to gets later - but sunrise continues to occur later, for a few weeks.

Why the delay in earlier sunrises?

It has to do with the tilted position of the earth on its axis. This means the Earth doesn't go around the Sun in a perfect circle. And because we are on a high latitude, we dont get the benefit of the early sunrise, just the later sunset.

the azimuth angle of the sun from the east is at a lower than in the west due to the tiltation of the earths rotational axis.

in ireland 6th january is a non-scientific date when an earlier sunrise is noticed.
