One of the best and indeed a personal favourite character actor Charles During has died at 89. Like many of his generation he has a life before acting including pro boxing (he had the build), dance instructor (he had the build!!) and as a soldier in WW2 (lucky to survive a massacre in 1944) only taking to the boards in his 40s. He hit his peak in the 70s when he appeared a string of big productions including The Sting, Dog Day Afternoon, The Hindenberg, The Fury, Enemy of the People, Starting Over, The Muppet Movie and a rare lead in the horror thriller When a Strange Calls, then he was Oscar nominated twice in quick succession with The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and To Be or Not to Be (1983) oddly enough at that point his career stalled, always busy but no big lead roles and quite a lot of television.

    His star turn :)

A silver star and three purple hearts, and only member of his company to survive the Normandy landings, then captured by the Nazis and barely escaped, what a guy

    RIP
